I read it in my phone during daily commune and when my phone broke it wasn't worth the effort of downloading again to finish. 4 months after I came to the conclusion I'll probably never download it again so here we are, 7/7/23 declaring the dnf status.
Quick read and a nice little YA/kids fantasy book. 40 years old and doesn't really show signs of age, will be interesting to read more of this series.
The other Elric stories (besides his 'end') were somewhat disappointing for me, in part because Michael Moorcock completely hits it out of the park with the thunderous opening volley of "The Dreaming City." The apex of pulp fiction and dark fantasy, with strong social commentary, tragic heroes that aren't really heroes, self-destructive quests with questionable goals and even more questionable outcomes, and a fantastic world in irreversible, self-induced decline.
It's no surprise that modern fantasy owes so much to Elric and his doomed travels.
4.5 out of 5 stars

A classic over the top epic fantasy. Fun but rather forgettable.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. Unlike your typical Tolkien-esque epic fantasy, Elric is a fast-paced series of memorable vignettes that just scratches the surface of what seems to be a rich and interesting world. So much comes and goes without much explanation, but in a way that feels satisfying and harkens to tales of the hero’s ancient personal quest. The imagery is rich and while the plot is incredibly simple at its core, it hits all the right notes. I liked Elric a lot for what it is, but at the end of the day there’s just not all that much to it, maybe not quite enough for me to feel fully enamored with it. That being said, I’m curious how the saga continues.
3.75? I really liked this, but wished it was longer.
I enjoyed this first book actually. I give it more slack based on its age. The callous disregard for others is interesting, and I thought the journey was engaging enough.
