Probably the best of the additional stories Moorcock tacked onto the saga after completing Stormbringer, but still somewhat inessential (and indeed rehashes some ideas already handled better in the original run of novellas). Beautiful book touching on the conflicting nature of men, morality, personal gain and destiny. It oddly reminded me of Ursula K. Le Guin’s work, which I think mostly had to do with the writing style. Moorcock’s writing is simple and concise, and it relies mostly on recounting events but somehow still maintains an air of mystery and doesn’t take away from character development. I really liked it!
For a prince of the Dragon Isle Elric of Melniboné was primarily an esoteric character.

So if you search through my Goodreads books, there is a good amount of fantasy in there but I had never picked up Moorcock's work. I actually liked this one and am tempted to read a few more. It's nothing great or inspiring but it had good progression to it--it didn't linger to long (I'm looking at you, late Robert Jordan). It reminded me a lot (for obvious reasons) of the DragonLance and Forgotten Realms series.

A) This book was difficult AF to find.
B) It is spare, the conflicts presumed, the action sporadic, the characters barely fleshed out
C) Maybe I'm spoiled by good epic fantasy, but this felt like an outline for a fantasy trilogy, packed into less than 200 pages, with most of the motivations and complications just omitted.
Maybe other books in the series add something to it, but I'm not hopeful.

Ok. I totally see how this is a classic.
A decadent empire in its last years, a pair of cousins in conflict for the throne. Ancient sorceries, demons, elementals, gods of chaos. It's all here.
The book itself is a great little introduction to Elric, who is the only man in the empire with some sense of morals - and he's supposed to be their emperor!
This was a great, fast read, and now I need to find the rest of the books in the series!

Eh. Competently written, beautiful imagery. The story and characters, however, felt flat and boring. I really wouldn’t recommend.
