It was great to be back in Newcastle with Vera but I was not expecting that ending!

ETA: I share some of the reservations other readers had with some of the language choices particularly around Vera’s body. I didn’t notice this in previous Vera books but some of the descriptions were kinda mean.

Good mystery, easy to read, not my favourite of all time but I'd read this author again.

A small island in the mist close to the Scottish border. A causeway inaccessible during the high tides. A murder among a group of friends who reunite every 5 years. The scene is perfectly set when Vera and her team comes in to investigate. The mystery is very well done, but in this installment a lot of emphasis is put on Vera herself and the changes in her mindset. She is a little softer, less demanding for both herself and her team. I could write a very long review pointing out all the choices that Mr. Cleeves makes that makes this series an prime example of perfection, but I will stick with the very strong recommendation to read the Vera Stanhope in order and be immersed in this very well crafted world set in Northumberland. This is without a doubt escapism and police procedural at its very best.
Bravo !
