I think the most helpful part of this book was just seeing the opposite side of therapy. I think understanding the way that they approach the process from their perspective kind of demystifies the whole process and makes it more approachable.
It's hard to understand how to act on her anecdotes though. She's unhappy so she quits her job and goes back to school. She wants a family so she has a kid through a sperm donor. But it's never acknowledged how she affords to do these things. Like not everyone can just quit their job and take on massive amounts of debt to go to school? Most people can't quit their job just because they need health insurance. She chooses to have a kid, single, while she's in graduate school. Does she have a trust fund? Are her parents paying for this? Finances are never really acknowledged and it feels very entitled to some extent.
It feels like she's telling me to pursue my dreams and uproot my life to pursue them but never explains how she's surviving while she uproots everything. Most people can't do what she did and it's never acknowledged that what she's doing might be impossible for some.

I think that due to some of the things happening currently in my current life this book meant a lot to me. I can see why people love it but I could also see how it just may not be the right book for some people as well.
really touching. just finished it and I feel like I speedran a year of therapy. I like how the patients were just funny and interesting dialogues at the start, and by the end I was so invested in how they were doing, particularly John's story touched me the most. And Julie's, as well. I'm giving this book 4 stars because it did feel long and slow, but the reading process was kind of therapy in itself. I'm lowkey thinking of seeing a therapist now. much to think about.
Wow. Brilliant, funny, enlightening. Makes you laugh, makes you think. Encouraging, inspiring.
