Argh, I must be the most perverse person on the planet. Everyone else LOVED this book, they rave about how Brent Mason is their new book boyfriend, how the banter between him and Kennedy is off the charts funny AND sexy, all I can think is meh.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this book, don't get me wrong. It's quite a sweet story about Brent re-connecting with the girl next door who broke his heart at boarding school. Of course there is more to the story than just Brent's POV. Kennedy remembers things very differently.

I think the very best line is close the beginning, when Brent and Kennedy first meet again:

“What'd you do to your face?" she asks, folding her arms.
I touch my chin. "I grew a beard."
"Well ungrow it. It looks like a vagina from a 1970s porn film.”
(thanks to the Book Nympho for the quote)

But otherwise, I didn't think the banter was particularly memorable.

I think if I hadn't read the first two I would really have liked this, but they set the bar very high and, sadly, I didn't think this one reached the same heights.

I wanted something light and easy to read after finishing Taking People by which was tense and rather depressing. Usually love hate romances or best friends turn lovers are not my first pick of choice but I thought I would give this a try. I found it refreshing that the story was told entirely from Brett's point of view, most romances are told from the female MC's pov or dual POVs.

It is hard not to like Brent even though his rich boy background would be enough to. I liked that the author chose to have a male character who was less than perfect as Brent has a prosthetic leg and he has this sense of wanting to make it on his own that felt very relatable. His sense of humour is really witty too and while he might seem like the light hearted one of the law firm, he has an alpha side as well.

Kennedy was out spoken and she isn't afraid to tell it like it is but she also has a soft side. While I like how much of a spit fire she is, I felt that their back and forth in the court room was unprofessional and that annoyed me about her. Kennedy may seem inexperienced when it comes to sex but she proved me wrong, seeming very comfortable doing whatever she liked. It was clear that both of them knew what they wanted and asked for it. Unusual for a romance but I think it is something that should be wrote about more in romances the fact that both parties can take charge and it isn't just the guy's responsibility to initiate and ask. I was pleased that the author wrote about court and law proceedings in an easy to understand manner without using jargon that non-legal people would not understand.

Their past was actually really sweet and because of how sad it ends, Kennedy has trusts issues and Brett does not want to risk getting hurt. I liked Brent did not give up on Kennedy and stood up for her. The only time he annoyed me was that silly fight they had at the end. It was fun to see the camaraderie between Stanton, Sofia, Jake and Brent with their friends and family. I love stories that have strong, supportive friendships.

I did not have much expectations going into this book but I am really interested to read the other books now. This is good balance of light romance, strong relationships, with steamy moments and abit of a thriller quality mixed with the excitement of working in the legal sector.

This book was unique because it was exclusively from the main male character’s point of view. It was part second chance romance and part enemies to lovers. Enemies to lovers still isn’t my genre because I can’t reconcile how much they hate each other with how much they grow to love each other. This is no exception. The damage that was caused to mmf’s childhood and self-esteem is so easily erased. I just wasn’t convinced they were really in love by the end of the book, and now I can’t even remember their names.

Instead of following his father’s dream and going into politics, Brent became a criminal defense attorney. To help those, who unlike him weren’t born with a silver spoon.
Kennedy, not longer the girl next door, is a prosecutor, working against him on his next case.
The two of them go way back and when Kennedy looks at Brent, she still sees the selfish teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd.
And while he wants to make up for the chance he missed in the past, she’s all up for revenge…

Unlike the previous books in the series and other books by the author, this one didn’t catch me from the beginning. But Brent, his attitude and his sense of humor, especially when he talked about his family’s wealth, and Kennedy, all smart and sassy made me love this in the end. These two together, their witty banter and mutual attraction, were simply amazing!

Their fling and feelings for each other, including the cliché misunderstanding in the past and her being so cautious now, were believable and entertaining and except for the epilogue, this was the perfect end to a series, I really loved and enjoyed.

Really not a fan of Male POVs in romance novels, for some reason it’s all too often and excuse to be gross about women??? Either way, they really tried for character development of the male lead (the success of which is arguable imo) but the female main character felt so incredibly flat. The kids were a fun cast of characters but it wasn’t enough to save the whole book.
