The book was good but I did feel like some parts were dramatic. Lia loves to do too much or overthink.

This is just a big eh unfortunately. I know these are teenagers so their actions don’t always make sense to me as an adult but the actions of our main character really, truly did not make sense. To the point where one of the main plot points was frustrating because you know the whole thing was over the top and unnecessary.
The pacing was super off in this book too. Starts off great, interesting narrator, meeting other characters. Then a big plot point will take place, lots of suspense and you think, ok things are really going to take off now. But it doesn’t and we’re just reading about her school days for a bit again. Then the pattern repeats like that a few times. You just get a bit of whiplash from that. And the ending was so rushed and felt wholly disconnected from the rest of the book and the plot that had been building.
One thing I did really love and enjoy in this book was the discussions about Indonesian culture and some of the issues of racism our narrator faced because she was native Indo and how she was treated by Chinese-Indo people. It opened by eyes to a new culture I knew nothing about and also taught me a bit about issues they face within that culture. Just a really great addition to the story and the main thing I liked about the book.

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I normally don’t read books about school aged people but this one was a wonderful exception! Just when you think it has to end, you get hit with more drama and suspense. It was very well written and you really go through so many emotions with the characters. There was also never once a dull moment and it’s very easy to get into.

Devo prendermi una pausa, ormai mi sembra chiaro. Quest'anno sta facendo veramente schifo, nessuna trama che mi ispirava anche solo un minimo si è rivelata decente.
✿ Perchè pure questo libro soffre della sindrome dell'essere inspiegabilmente infantile e melodrammatico e dell'avere personaggi che sono ciò che sono tanto perchè devono esserlo ed un accozaglia di cose buttate tutte insieme per fare dramma ma che diventano troppo inverosimili e, appunto, melodrammatiche. Il primo giorno di scuola assistiamo ad una ragazza che viene trascinata fuori dalla scuola con la forza e tutti la riprendono con il telefono facendosi delle grasse risate, ora, che lei abusasse di sostanze o meno in questo frangente è irrilevante, è una cosa umanamente disgustosa da fare e lei dovrebbe gia odiare tutto e tutti o comunque iniziare ad essere un po' prevenuta verso una scuola che permette questo. Ma prendiamo per buono che lei non si voglia immischiare e voglia solo andare al college, alla fine finisce per farsi coinvolgere ed è bravissima a complicare la situazione con le scelte che fa.
C'è il gruppetto delle mean girls di turno perchè non sia mai, che la odiano gia prima di conoscerla perchè è ovvio e la odiano ancora di più quando si rendono conto che lei è la più veloce della squadra. Come fa ad essere così veloce visto che beve alcol, salta i pasti e va in sovrastimolazione muscolare dal troppo allenarsi non ce lo spiegheremo mai. A questo punto invece di allenarvi seriamente e nel modo corretto fate come lei e il problema è risolto.
✿ C'è il popolare della scuola a cui TUTTE sbavano dietro anche se è semplicemente un tipo, mascellone con la fossetta sul mento che a quanto pare è la cosa più sexy che un ragazzo possa avere. Non mi faccio domande. Che noi conosciamo immediatamente perchè la va a conoscere subito dopo il suo arrivo nella stanza del campus. E perchè fa una cosa simile? Boh. Io anche qui, due domandine me le sarei poste fossi stata in lei ma perchè mai. Questo posto è pieno di ricchi viziati e privilegiati che sono stronzi tanto per però lui no, è il più popolare della scuola però va dalla nuova arrivata poraccia che nessuno si incula a presentarsi. Perchè? Sti ricchi poi sono straricchi al punto da pagare 10 mila dollari per ottenere una A ad un compito. E qui ti chiedi, perché lei sta qui? Perchè è veloce a correre ma davvero questa scuola piena di ricchi ha bisogno di prendere una poveraccia con una borsa di studio? Per cosa? Pubblicità?
✿ Esiste il DD, un social network dove gli studenti e i professori della scuola possono iscriversi anonimamente e postare cattiverie che tutti possono leggere e a cui tutti possono rispondere. Perché? Ma sopratutto questo è bullismo, quale scuola può permettere una cosa del genere? Com'è possibile che nessuno al di fuori sa nulla? Ma poi perchè viene preso così seriamente quello che viene scritto? Senza prove. Se non hai il coraggio di metterci la faccia la tua opinione non conta.
