Frindle

I remember loving this as a child. It was really fun to read this aloud with my girls.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Read this book with my 5th grade class this year. It was the first year I'd read it to the whole class, and the first year I've ever read it. I really appreciate everything this book did and making you understand Nick's side, but I really loved how they handled what it is like to be a teacher.

We really enjoyed it as a class. For book written a few decades ago at this point, I think Frindle holds up very very well.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Character centered, inspiring, fast paced

Astonishing

What fun! I was glad to see that the far-reaching effects of creating a new word were explored. Also, that Ms. Granger’s role, or lack thereof, was confirmed. I thought the ending was perfect and truly enjoyed the read.
fast-paced

Nick enters a battle of wills with his English teacher when he invents the new word frindle.

This book is on all of the lists of top 100 children's books. I thought it was just ok.

Entertaining kids book, going to be a Bluestem nominee next year wanted a headstart on reading that list.

Bah! Would have been fine if this was the only Clements book I read. But as a 4/5 teacher, I've also read No Talking! and The Report Card. The problem is that Clements uses the exact same plot line/formula for each of his books.

1.Clever kid comes up with an idea/social experiement.
2.Adults get pissed. Kid in trouble at school.
3.Consensus reached. Kid made point.
4.Adults and kids so happy together again.

I will not be reading any more books by Clements when there are so many other fabulous children's authors out there who are creative in their writing!

Andrew Clements: Stop writing the same book over and over!!!!
