It started good, then it kind of got stuck in time for a few chapters, but in the end it got back up and the last like 10 chapters were actually really fast paced

I received this book as a lovely gift from my sister- a blind date with a book box with cute little goodies. I was so excited to read it! And honestly, it kept me hooked. It felt like a Freida McFadden book but with better writing. The only thing was the character Paula very suddenly became VERY annoying. But we do find out why she was that way at the end. Great plot twist and left you on a nice note.

What a tangled web we weave! The first couple chapters start off slow, but not in a boring way, more like you’re easing into this tale. It’s brilliantly written so that you start asking questions. Who is this patient? Who is Melanie? How is this lawyer going to come in to play? There are comments and clues that are subtly woven into thoughts and conversations. There are enough to peek your interest but not so much that you linger. I was able to piece together parts of the puzzle on my own, but the ending? Wow! The last 20% had me spinning, jaw on the floor. It all made so much sense, but I never saw it coming. Your entire perception is flipped
**Spoilers Ahead**
I had correctly guessed that Paula’s “mayor affair” was also Anne’s husband. I assumed Paula was going after Anne to ruin her career and give Derrek an excuse to leave. Sure, that was part of it, but there was so much more to it! I was getting increasingly more annoyed by Paula and Wolfe did a fantastic job of creating such an unlikeable character. The “woe is me” attitude that, because she struggled, anyone who didn’t is somehow inherently bad. She’s a jealous fool who knowingly started an affair with a married man and is now angry about her situation, that is entirely her own fault. She can’t see beyond her own hatred or ambitions. Paula comes off as “The cliché mistress.“ Until she doesn’t. Until you realize she starts an affair to avenge her sister. Until you realize Anne let her patient die to avenge her adopted sister, Melanie. Paula’s sister. It takes such talent to have the reader going from hating the protagonist, to understanding and sympathizing with them in an instant. It illustrates how trauma and heartache can completely warp our perspective. All these mind-blowing twists feel like whiplash and then.. it just ends! So brilliantly frustrating. Even though you can probably put the final pieces together on your own, you’re still left wanting more.

Meh. A bit overwrought and overwritten in parts. I didn’t really connect with the mc to feel genuine adrenaline and care. As a superstar surgeon with her accolades she should have been a bit more astute and more confident. This was a case of tell versus show in the author’s character development. I never had any reason to trust or distrust her. Instead we see her second guess herself and everyone. Same with Paula. She was rotten from the first appearance with no explanation other than advancing her career. I also found it 98% predictable. But, I didn’t guess the final twist. So there’s that.
