This book took me nearly a year on audio book. Apparently I don't listen to audio books often and it took a solid day of painting my son's room to get through it. I think it was a good book but I probably would have liked it better if I'd read it. I kept getting lost in the timeline while listening to it. Also I should've re-read Little Women first. Overall it was fine. I love this author though so will definitely be reading more of hers.

This book was pretty uneven. There's no denying the beauty of the prose, but by the end of Part One I was ready to strangle Mr. March. The audacity of that man!! Perhaps the intention was to highlight how best intentions can go wrong (in his case, devastatingly), but in his case I just could not believe how a man could do the wrong thing at almost every turn. To be so willfully and dangerously naive!! To risk so many lives for one man (when he speaks up to rescue Ethan Canning of all people!!). Just one atrocious move after another.

I really liked when we got to Part Two and Marmee took over. I thought the interactions between her and Mrs. Hale and Grace were especially powerful. Had more of the book been from her POV, I would have rated it higher.

In the end, Mr. March is just a mediocre white man with a savior complex who would rather be seen as a hero than a good father and man. Surprise, surprise!!

The author takes the point of view from the father (Mr. March) from "Little Women" and tells his story. He is a chaplain in the civil war for the union side and tells about the heartaches and adventures of war. What's cool is that it ties in with the "little women" but you don't have to read it to understand March. Just fun little ties. I also really liked it because it's not just about war, but more about the value of a human life as he expresses what he feels about the slave situation and the such. This would be a great book to read for a book club. And you should thank me.

This book is beautiful. It earned it's Pulitzer. It also absolutely killed my soul, and I can't rate or review it in good conscience.

I thought that because the tragedy here isn't disease based that it would be okay to read. However, the supremely real depictions of the Civil War and the tragedies behind the scenes, while compelling, were too much for my current mental state.

I'd love to give this another go during a less tumultuous time.

My wife urged this one on me. I have not read Little Women and I am not a Civil War buff, but I don't think it mattered--this book did not require it. Good story, great description of DC during the war. The concept of a new fictional character related to a well known existing character is interesting.
