It was hard to read ( writing style) and hard to take( horrors of slavery and civil war. Author packed in a lot for such a small book.

Meh, I didn't dislike it but I wasn't crazy about it either. I like the historical aspect of it but honestly it took me right up until the end of the book to be really invested at. Quick read but I didn't love it.

I've enjoyed reading Geraldine Brooks' novels over the years, but "March" was different. It was brilliantly written and very deserving of a Pulitzer Prize award. The superb editing set the pace of the gorgeous story telling. The ending, especially the last paragraph, was deeply satisfying.
For a relatively short book, it took me a while to finish. I could only read a chapter or two at a time, because the story was densely detailed. The style and choice of words, mimicking a 19th century work, demanded focus. I had to be in the right mood to pick up the book again. But when the point of view switched to Marmee March, I devoured the last third of the novel in one sitting.

It would be interesting to read this along side Little Women to see the parallel storylines.
I have not read much historical fiction, nor studied Civil War history; I have not read Little Women and this is my first read of Geraldine Brooks.
The moral questions posed by the work, and the conflict between ideals and reality promise to make this a lively book club discussion. I am impressed by the extensive research and the consistent voice Brooks created for the characters. She painted a vivid picture of the environment and the circumstances which enable me to engage fully with the story.

I truly enjoyed this book and the beautiful writing style. It took a while for me to become invested, and to handle the dark wages of war that Brooks writes about, but once I did — I could t put it down.
By far, my favorite characters are the women that make up this novel. Marmee, Grace, Zannah. They were all just beautifully written!
