The End of Temperance Dare by Wendy Webb

I received a free copy through Netgalley, in return for my honest review.

Eleanor, the main character, feels she is drawn to Cliffside, the old sanatorium turned into retreat for artists. She always looked up to the Dare-sisters, and feels honoured that she is allowed to be the new director of the place. But what is this haunting feeling she keeps getting - is it really only her own stress?

This book took me back to my youth, when I loved to read books of the scary kind. I wasn't a gothic girl just for the nice dresses, although the books were not as scary as this - most of the time. It's half past ten in the evening now, I just finished 'The End of Temperance Dare', and I've warned The Husband that I might get some serious nightmares this time. If you ask me if the book was worth this, I will say 'it absolutely is!'

I've totally read Ms Webb's books out of order. This one was far darker than any of her other novels. Not so much magical realism and more like paranormal, touching on horror.

Damn. Just trying to get my heart rate down as I write this review.

I don’t read a lot of horror/ghost/paranormal books because they scare the crap out of me. And I generally only read in the dark at bedtime soooo my overactive imagination runs a little wild. I was drawn to this novel as it takes place on the shores of Lake Superior where I live so it’s super easy to envision the scenery and atmosphere. Plus, I had read another book by this author and really enjoyed it. { Having said that, this book was MUCH scarier than the other one I read.

I would say this fits in the category of “a great vacation read.” Being honest, I was hoping for something more when I read the book’s description, but it’s certainly not bad. The story itself is really intriguing and fun, I just think it could be much better written. Everything escalates in a very quick (and not, like, traditional thriller quick) and somewhat contrived way. The writing could certainly be more articulate and descriptive. Also, and I suppose this is more personal preference than anything else, it got a little too “romance novel-y” for me at points. It seemed somewhat out of place. However, I still enjoyed reading this book! I love the concept and the story, and as a big fan of lakes, especially the Great ones here in the US, I enjoyed the setting very much. I would recommend this book, but don’t go into it with super high expectations. Also it’s a very quick read, so if you’re looking for something to bolster your “Read” list, this wouldn’t be a bad choice!

This one really had me engaged and into the story. I felt like I was truly in the former sanatorium.

Definitely a page turner. Although each of the different twists and turns has the potential go into melodramatic territory, the book itself only really steps over that line once or twice. The mystery is compelling, but ends up being much more of a spooky thrill ride than a detective book. Not a book to read before bed, in the best way.

Oh my gosh where do I start. The dialogue was AWFUL, no one talks the way the characters do in this book! The insta-love was ridiculous and the love triangle even more so. But the kicker was the ridiculous supernatural element. I thought this was a murder mystery but evidently I missed the paranormal part. Don’t worry it was all neatly solved and tied in a bow in like the last 4 pages. So. Dumb.

The End of Temperance Dare by Wendy Webb is a good fit for those seeking a haunting and atmospheric mystery that delves into family secrets and the eerie sins of the past.

When Eleanor Harper becomes the director of a renowned artists’ retreat, she knows nothing of Cliffside Manor’s dark past as a tuberculosis sanatorium, a “waiting room for death.”

This book quite simply was not to my taste. I found it neither frightening nor believable to the point that I almost gave up midway through.
