Beautifully produced audiobook with some very evocative writing, I just wish it was longer.

A lovely multi-sensory tour through local wild spaces (for some of us) as we travel through wood and grassland and past river and garden. Each section opens with a beautiful, poetic opening from Dara and then short facts around the wildlife found there whether animal or plant. As a bridge between habitats, Dara shares a creative activity for readers to consider. I especially enjoyed Dara's notes on how we should care for and be considerate of the environment as we're exploring it. Falls' style and design throughout really carries the book which is a little limited in content. I think this was my only gripe: that some spreads felt drawn out with little text and either needed more written content or to be honestly a little smaller in size.

For the nature nerd, nature lover, the inquisitive observer—this book is absolutely a MUST! Gorgeous illustrations, intriguing facts, fun how-to experiments and creations, creative writing pieces hodge-podged in-between. This book is a perfect companion for exploring outside and learning to appreciate the world around us! Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing. Aimed at a younger audience, but I'd say it's for all ages. My 8 year old also liked it.

Wild Child by Dara McAnulty
Illustrated by Barry Falls

This is a stunning, informative and fascinating book all about nature.
It guides the reader to identify plants, animals and insects in the local environment and teaches young children how to explore habitats.

The book is subdivided into five sections. I love the fact that it starts by encouraging children to just observe what they can see from their own window. Something it is so easy to take for granted! It moves on to chapters on The Garden, The Woods, Going Upland and The River.

Each chapter has such a range of material: facts, poetry and great activities such as making a Bird Feeder, a Terrarium or a Journey Stick.

My 7 year old daughter has frequently picked up this book to read. She loves reading the poetic verses aloud and she has learnt such a lot of new facts: 'Mummy did you know that May Bugs, Red Underwing Moths and Ladybirds all like to live in Oak Trees?'

The illustrations throughout are absolutely incredible. Barry Falls is such a talented artist.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to encourage or develop a love of local wildlife with their children. It would also make a lovely gift.
