Perfect type of summer read. Snarky, self-mocking and a fun read.
Yet another re-read! I'm a re-reading machine this month. Also, Meg Cabot is love Meg Cabot is life. I would read her grocery lists and love them.
The first book in a mystery series starring the former pop sensation Heather Wells is a tad underwhelming, albeit an entertaining page-turner. Though Heather is a likable character, her narration can be annoying, and I sometimes wished for an omniscient narrative voice. For example, the repeated phrase ". . . the dorm--I mean, residence hall . . ." was worn out within the first few chapters. I thought (hoped) it would stop as Heather became more comfortable with her job, but it didn't.
Heather is working at a New York college as an assistant residence director, trying to carve out a new place in life. During the first semester, two freshmen die in apparent accidents, though Heather is suspicious. After all, young women just don't elevator surf. So she starts to investigate on her own, risking her own life in the process. If that weren't enough, Heather wonders whether her ex's brother is interested in her, and lives for the day when he realizes she's in love.
Though I wavered back and forth throughout the novel over whether I was actually enjoying it, I think I will end up reading the next two books in the series. Heather is a likable character, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Review from 2008 when I first read this tale.
If you're looking for a hardcore, edge-of-your-seat thriller, this isn't the book for you. However if you are looking for an entertaining read with a hint of mystery, I recommend "Size 12 is Not Fat" by Meg Cabot.
The downside to "Size 12 is Not Fat" is that it took considerable time to get into the story and I did guess the culprit very early on however the positives include very likeable characters and an amusing and entertaining read.
I liked it enough to decide to read the next in the series, "Size 14 is Not Fat Either".

I think if you cut out all the stupid talk about weight and pant size this could have been an ok book. I really think that basing a whole series on “size 12 is not fat” was a real bad idea. You really couldn’t come up with anything better???? Anything?
Size 12 Is Not Fat is the first book in the Heather Wells mystery series. Heather Wells is a former teen popstar. Her record label fired her when she decided she wanted to write her own songs and her mother ran off with her manager and her money. She's started a new job as the assistant director of a residence hall at New York College and plans to go back to school as well. When two girls who live in the residence hall are killed, the police chalk it up to elevator surfing accidents. Heather suspects foul play and since no one will listen, she takes it upon herself to investigate.
Luckily, I've already read the third book in this series so I know it gets better than this first book. Heather is a sweet, charming character but the mystery storyline in this book is pretty ridiculous. There's no way that police would not do more of an investigation on why/how these girls died. Even Heather's private investigator landlord refuses to acknowledge that foul play may have been involved - I don't think so.
I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator did a good job and it was fun to listen to. However, every time Heather thinks or says "dorm" she corrects herself and says, "I mean, residence hall." That got REALLY grating after a while. That's not the narrator's fault of course but I wonder if it would have been as annoying in print. And who cares whether you call it a dorm or residence hall?
If you read this book and are not impressed, I recommend sticking with the series anyway - it'll get better!

A delightful start to what should be a great series.
Heather Wells was a teen rock sensation. But, that has ended with a lost record contract, lost boyfriend, and gaining a few pounds landing her wearing a size 12. Now she is trying to find a sense of normal as an assistant dorm director at one of New York's top colleges.
Only something is amok at the dorm. Freshman women are dying. The authorities are saying they are incidents of elevator surfing gone bad. But, she knows that couldn't be what has happened.
Once she decides to start poking around into their deaths, things get worse. It seems the killer is going to silence her before she can solve the mystery.
I'd put this as a chick lit title full of fun and a great quick read. And, as someone who has not been able to get below a size 12 in her entire adult life, I totally agree with the title!

I picked this up on CD on a whim while preparing for a trip to Miami recently and really enjoyed it. I've never read Meg Cabot's stuff before and I found it light and fun. The ending was predictable, but I enjoyed the ride there! I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series....
Totally cute, not wholly predictable (a good quality in a mystery). Overall I really enjoyed it!
