Amazing finale. I’d give the full series a 5.5.

As a an avid LOTR movie watcher growing up, the books add SO MUCH to even the extended editions that the stories felt even more alive and relatable than their on-film counterparts.

Which is not to diminish the incredible live action battle scenes, which in the books are sped by with quick lines of outcomes, or the dramatic performances by the actors, who definitely cemented themselves as who I envisioned the characters to be.

The complaints about excessive descriptions of nature or medieval bureaucracy could be warranted but personally I loved how vivid it made Middle-Earth. Not once did I skim a lengthy segment going over the details of a path through the mountains or an overview of the Gondor city watch.

Having said all this, I can still understand that the books are not for everyone BUT at least the final segment heading back the Shire should be added to every LOTR:EE experience. It perfectly bookends the story of the hobbits going on an adventure. I also loved the timeline at the end of the book that helped track the overlapping adventures while also allowing the reader to say final warm goodbyes to the Fellowship.

(Tried to read this in March 2024)
  • I tried. God knows I REALLY tried with these books but I just could not take it anymore, it’s so damn fucking BORING 😭 this was my last straw, I did not pay attention to what was going on, I have no idea where everyone was or what they were doing and I didn’t care anyways. After two months I was even going to maybe give it a chance again kind of forcing myself just so I could say I read it?? but there’s a big waiting time in Libby and nope I will not do it.
  • I’m still going to watch the movies because I do find them okay (not a big fan of them either) but I love the soundtrack so that helps.
  • I guess The Hobbit movies and book will remain my favorite of J. R. R. Tolkien. I don’t have it in me to even try the other stuff from this universe.

***For some reason I haven't added this book in my read selve....***
The last arc for the lord of the Rings series. And whether the movies had to end with a boom, the book didn't do so. I did love that the ending had some questioning on the society and the changes that time brings. However, honestly, in these books, Tolkien's writing killed me. It was a slow death. The chapters went for pages and pages, with long speeches and so. The action was less and the poems plenty. I have read this one back in high school and I still remember struggling to finish it, although, Tolkien has a magical way to make you stick to it.
