A book picked by my husband, based on its cover. Not something I would have spontaneously chosen myself, probably, but very happy to have read it. A sort of modern version of Jonah and the whale, though that is not why the book kept me hooked : though written in 2015, this book is very up to date at the moment, since it is about a society being struck by a pandemic, hitting the world hard and millions die. interesting to read in these Corona times and see, amongst others, the differences between how the characters in the book act (work together and help each other) and how the world chose to act during the Corona pandemic (we can't really call it working together when people deliberately ignore restrictions, chose not to take the vaccin and by doing so put others in danger, can we?). Lots of food for thought.

(English below) Ein Buch über eine Pandemie war wirklich das allerletzte, das ich lesen wollte, aber dann ist dieser 470 Seiten schwere Wälzer ohne mein Zutun in meinem Haushalt gestrandet und jetzt hab ich mich von "Der Wal und das Ende der Welt" doch richtig gut unterhalten gefühlt!

Ich hab "Der Wal und das Ende der Welt" als sehr versöhnliches, perspektive-zurechtrückendes Buch empfunden, das man auch - oder gerade - in der aktuellen Situation sehr gut lesen kann.

Wie haltet ihr das denn mit dem "Bücher über Seuchen während einer Pandemie lesen"? "Die Pest" und "Liebe in Zeiten der Cholera" sollen dieses Jahr ja auch sehr beliebt gewesen sein?

A book about a pandemic was the very last thing! wanted to read. But then this 400+ pages strong tome happened to strand in my home without my involvement and I was positively surprised!

"Not forgetting the whale" turned out to be a very entertaining, conciliatory book, which set my perspective straight. It's definitely not a bad book choice in the current situation!

What's your stance on reading about plagues and pestilences during a global pandemic? I heard, that "The Plague" by Camus was quite popular lately!

Wenn man 5 Jahre nach Beginn einer Pandemie über eine Epidemie und die möglichen Folgen davon liest, und wenn man dann feststellt, dass das Buch 1 Jahr vor Beginn besagter Pandemie veröffentlicht wurde, ist das schon ein wenig beklemmend. Gut, dass Corona anders verlief, schade, dass sich die Menschen dabei teilweise anders verhalten haben. 
Jedenfalls klang das Buch in mancherlei Hinsicht sehr realistisch. Es ließ sich wirklich gut und schnell lesen und hat mich manchmal nachdenklich gemacht. Nur die Liebesgeschichte (oder die Andeutung davon) war mehr als überflüssig...
