Handmaids tale, meets ex machina, meets the stepford wives.

I really enjoyed this story, its exploration of artificial intelligence, empathy, and the different, subtle ways in which abuse can manifest in relationship floored me. Though annie is not an “real” women, she shares in the real world plait of dating shitty, emotionally unavailable men, who want a “perfect women” - someone who only exists to please him, is his mother, his therapist, and his subordinate all at once - god it was so well done. I adored Annie’s voice, it was so compelling to move with her through her journey of self discover. Doug was the scum of the earth, but you bet your bottom dollar he thinks he’s a “nice guy”. The shear amount of hatred I hold for him is astounding. Bravo.

Just to say it out loud: Doug you're the most pathetic man I've read about all year! Anyways. ..
It saddens me to think about how people are stuck in these kind of emotional abusive relationships in real life. Even though Annie is "just" an AI she still seemed like a real woman.

I found this book compelling, but as I've sat with it I like it less. I think I'm just really uncomfortable with the idea of a robot woman becoming somewhat sentient and autonomous, and still being stuck, owned by a man, and unhappy. That is the reality of too many woman in our world, we don't need to create robots to suffer the same fate.
