Really a story about an abusive relationship with a power imbalance. Kind of felt like a grooming situation since she was too inexperienced to know anything else. I wish the author had expanded more on the inner battle between wanting autonomy vs wanting to make others happy. The ending was great but I wish I got more on her emotions and rage in the end

This book really surprised me, and it’s my first 5-star read of the year. Set in the (probably) near future, Annie is a robot designed to pleasure her owner, Doug. She’s set to “autodidactic” mode though, which means she can think & feel *almost* like a human. The story is fast-paced and the perfect length—Annie explores her identity, learns who she is with Doug, and wonders who she could become without him. I found myself really rooting for Annie (and absolutely hating Doug), despite her robot status. I thought the commentary on what it means to be human was insightful & the entire premise of the story was creative and only a little bit scary—robots walking around essentially cosplaying as humans? Weird, but cool.

Holy shit. This book was a wild ride. I have never read anything like this and I was hooked from the first page. The amount of emotional attachment I feel to Annie is wild. You fall in love with this character and are constantly having to remind yourself that she’s a robot. It’s wild. It also explores some really deep, emotional facets of being human, such as autonomy, personhood, desire, longing, self-exploration, introspection, misogyny, and more. I’m in shock and awe over this book. I cannot rave about it enough.

I’m always interested in stuff about AI/robots and this didn’t disappoint! V interesting discussions about autonomy, personhood, domestic violence, misogyny and more. I especially vibed with the ending.

This was a super quick read for me because I was completely immersed from the moment I started reading. This is a unique twist on your typical coming-of-age story and I loved Annie’s journey of understanding herself and what it means to be human. This had a very small cast of characters, the main, Annie and Doug who were very well written. It was easy to understand and empathize with Annie while Doug was a very unique and complex antagonist. I really enjoyed this debut novel and I will be thinking about it for a while!
