Roommate Arrangement by Saxon James is an enjoyable read, a cute BL story that centers on Payne's journey of self-rediscovery after his divorce. However, the character that truly shines is Beau. As a BL novelist, Beau's dedication to his craft is captivating; his manic commitment to ensuring the authenticity of his characters, even through unconventional methods, is both endearing and amusing. Beau's quirky and vulnerable nature makes him a lovable and memorable character.

Nice and easy if you just switch off.
I call these types of books my “inbetweeners”. They just kind of fill the gap until I find something I really want to read.
The characters are likeable enough, the plot is fine (albeit not entirely unique), not too cheesy but they do tend to be very superficial and therefore forgettable.

This book had no business being this good.
I’ve been reading a lot lately, and while many have been enjoyable, none of them really scratched that itch, until this one.
Years of pining. Years. Ugh, this hurt so much, but it was so worth it. I genuinely cried from heartbreak for Beau. And for Payne too.
Beau was incredibly relatable, especially when it came to people. He was quirky, sweet, incredibly supportive, selfless, and assertive when he needed to be.
I loved how upfront he was about everything. The way he was willing to settle for crumbs from Payne just to have a piece of him made my heart ache. I loved him so much and just wanted to wrap him in a hug. Every small heartbreak in this book had me in a chokehold.

The thing about loving someone is you don’t get to do it with conditions attached. I don’t love him expecting him to return it. I don’t love him hoping I’ll get over it, or that I can transfer that love to someone else. I just love him. I’m starting to realize that maybe that’s enough. It’s not the easiest option, but it’s the one that makes me happy.
Payne was scared. After everything that happened with his ex, he was hesitant to open up again. But despite the fear, he never dismissed Beau’s feelings. He put Beau first. He was emotionally strong and so incredibly sweet. The cranes with the little notes around the house? Destroyed me.
“You’re the most perfectly un-normal person I’ve ever met. I didn’t fail. There was nothing to improve.”
“You’re the one who was always meant for me. And I’m sorry it took me so long to figure that out.”
This was so romantic and intimate. A hopeless romantic’s dream. Coloring in his tattoos together just to relax? A picnic inside a tent in the house because it rained on the night you planned a practice date under the stars? Spending the day folding cranes and drawing on them, and I quote, “on the wing, a sneaky little love heart”? Waking up to cute messages and a crane on your cup, or finding them scattered around the house? It was all so thoughtful and incredibly sweet.
I truly hate when people say “we’re too old for that.”
I want a partner who can be silly and ridiculous with me. Playing sword fights in the living room?
That’s the dream, actually. Thank you very much.
“Wish,” “could’ve,” and “if” are hard to let go of, even when you know there’s no point in holding onto them. Payne spent twelve years with someone who didn’t deserve him, and that gave me a fresh wave of heartbreak for him.
I get that your friends or your partner don’t have to hate the people you don’t like. But I’m vindictive, so seeing Beau connect so deeply with Payne’s struggles and getting mad and hurt on his behalf was so satisfying. I loved that for Payne. Having someone who takes your side and doesn’t try to play Switzerland is such a blessing.
There was one thing that stung though. I would be hurt if someone I loved had been married before, but then told me they couldn’t marry me because “husband” no longer meant anything. Like you could be that for your ex, but not for me? I get it, but ouch.
Anyway, aside from that, I truly have no complaints.
I’m so in love with both Payne and Beau that not a single moment of this book felt boring. I just wish I had picked it up sooner.

Payne discovers his husband has been cheating and leaves him and their life behind to go back to his hometown whilst sorting the divorce. At 40, he never expected to be starting over and moving in with his brothers best friend Beau, and being roommates wasn't in his life plan either. Beau has always had feelings for Payne so being in such close proximity to him is difficult, he worries his scatterbrained tendencies are going to be too much for Payne to handle but Payne embraces Beau for who he is and feelings soon start to develop.
I enjoyed this friends to lovers/brothers' best friend/roommates romance. The way the romantic element developed between Beau & Payne felt so natural and steady, and their connection outside of it shone through. There was mutual respect and friendship there from the start. Beau is very clearly neurodivergent although that isn't expressly stated by the author, but if he isn't an ADHD King, I would be shocked! Beau is quirky and adorable, and Payne matches his energy and encourages/helps him with things it's clear others in Beaus past have ridiculed him for. I liked that the MCs were older Payne 40 & Beau 36, and the Divorce Men's Club Payne becomes a part of seems filled with characters whose stories I'm looking forward to.
Overall, this is a low angst, cute cosy reas with good banter and spice sprinkled in and gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings I was looking for. Nick J Russo narrates and, as always, did a fantastic job with their performance, and I had a great time listening to this book and am already looking forward to the next in this series. 🌶🌶
