This book was so great. Edith was a wonderful character - one of the best I've read from a child's perspective. I think it's a pretty accurate reflection of the world too in how we tend to disbelieve children. I loved her tenacity and her openness to the imagined world and the real world, and the delicate balance between respecting authority and asserting personal presence and finding personal power. Oh, and the villain - she was pernicious!

Overall, I had a fun time reading this. I think the author did an incredible job of capturing the youthful and outspoken voice of the main character. The pacing didn't feel very balanced to me, though, and some parts just didn't seem to flow with the rest of the story.

A great voice, it is so believably told through the eyes of a young girl. The ending felt a little muddled but overall very good.

Bangin. Edward Carey, you've done it again, you little weirdo. Love this guy.

Edith is wonderful and I loved spending time with her. I laughed, I cried! The book was weird and twisted and deeply macabre - quite the penny dreadful.

Can I give this more than 5 stars?! I really cannot express how much I loved this book. This is my third Edward Carey book and most definitely my favourite. Edith May Holler pulls us into her own world of the theatre and it is one that is magically dark. One that is filled with bugs, dolls, murder, mourning and ghosts. In Edith’s own words it is ‘wonderful! And Dreadful! All at once.’ I have never read a modern book with such a compelling historical voice. I think everyone should read this and venture through the realms of life and death contained within the Holler theatre through the eyes of Edith, a most talented playwright.
