Wowowow. I wasn’t sure about this one but pushed through and I’m so glad I did. It’s slow but really revs up toward the end. Plot twists that I absolutely did not see coming. Despite the multiple timeline and storylines, I felt it was relatively easy to follow. Gorgeous writing and storytelling.

Holy shit. One of the best books I've read recently, possibly ever. It's slow going for ages, feels like reading two separate books. And then around page 400, 450, they start to draw together, and the last 25% of the book races (in it's peculiar, slow motion way) toward that soft, gentle, devastating ending. I felt very removed from the book for a long time. It was like a dream. For hundreds of pages I couldn't decide if I liked it or not, but I liked the experience of reading it, so I kept on. &.I'm so glad I did.

This book has a narrative structure with several stories contained in and interweaved through the main storyline of Iris from a young girl into old age. I appreciated the melancholy and wistful tone of this novel. It was very confusing, and one that may take another read or two to fully appreciate the convoluted storyline(s) and symbolism. I can’t put my finger on why exactly I liked this book but the incredible writing and relationship between Iris and Laura really spoke to me.

Did I miss something? Is this book a commentary on something? A convoluted story line of no import, it seems. Strange to read this after Oryx and Crake and Year of the Flood.
