Kane Cannon, is a Ghostwalker and is every mission is prepared for anything that may come his way. However on this mission, he is unprepared when he sees Rose Patterson, a fellow Ghostwalker, and pregnant with his child, Kane is in shock in seeing her, in Mexico in the middle of a war zone between drug lords, and his protective instincts go through the roof at seeing her eight months pregnant, and even though he knows she can take care of her self (she is a Ghostwalker), this demand to protect her and keep her at his side is unrelenting, and he knows it will never stop. Rose, is determined never to have Whitney find her and her child, she still has nightmares over the things she experienced as a child, and now will never let her own child go through what she had to, even if that means running away from the one man she has trusted. But there are factions out there after her, and she must rely on Kane if they mean to survive, and being together...Ruthless Game is ninth installment in the Ghostwalker Series written by Christine Feehan. I have just loved this series, but I think after reading this latest, that this is my favorite book in the series. I fell in love with both characters, and I think I love them both equally, Kane is very much of a more commanding man, however he has a gentle side with Rose, which I found remarkably sweet. Rose although grew up as a fighter and training to be a Ghostwalker, still wants to feel needed and cherished, and have a prince charming of her own. As always a book from the Ghostwalker series, this one was filled with danger and intrigue and a powerful love story that will sing to your heart, just as it did to mine. Christine Feehan has done it again, having me fall in love with another of her creations.

Loved this one - one of my favorites of the Ghostwalker series.
Ruthless Game, the ninth book in Christine Feehan’s GhostWalker series, is filled with high octane suspense, friendship, loyalty, and love. With hostage rescues, drug cartels, a redoubtable and loyal group of fellow GhostWalkers, a courageous and loving hero and a heroine who can shoot an Uzi with the best of them and also happens to be pregnant, well, you have the makings of hold-on-to your seats, exciting romantic suspense. I have to say I don’t usually enjoy books where the heroine is pregnant, but this one broke through all of my prejudices and was one of my favorite books of the series.

Kane finally finds his woman! I really enjoyed this one. Kane and Rose are fighting to keep their newborn away from Whitney. Along the way they deal with betrayal, kidnapping, possible death, and of course their feelings for each other.

Rose was a strong heroine who I instantly loved. She kicked ass, dealt with pregnancy by herself, and has some cool abilities. Kane was the perfect partner for her. He was so strong but also caring. I loved how beautiful the scenes with Kane and the newborn were. Just so adorable seeing big strong men fall for a tiny baby.

Now to see what's going on with Javier and Rhiannon.

First third was reasonably enjoyable - up until they returned to the warehouse. Then it was just boring. The story would have benefited from finishing once the baby was born and they returned to the USA.

Meh, I think I'm done with this series. I fully expect a Feehan novel to be overwrought and overwritten and, while I usually find them entertaining, you could easily edit out 10-20% of this one without noticing. Also, the subtitle of this particular book could be "when inconsistencies become plot holes".

Plot: While I appreciate the Feehan spends a lot of effort on getting the fight scenes right, I wish she's spend some of that energy on the actual romance. The genetic engineering + pregnancy/baby = insta-love really bugged me. Also, the political and cultural analysis of what is probably Mexico was over-simplified to the point where I really wanted to yell at the author to shut off the cable news and do some actual research. That's probably just a personal annoyance though. I think the biggest problem with the plotting is that the main storyline has changed so hugely since the beginning of the series that I don't think Feehan really knows where she wants to take it; it's all over the place.

Characters: Rose, the heroine of Chinese ancestry, is described as a "porcelain doll" and "little ballerina" to such an extent that it was kind of fetishy-creepy, especially when she was being contrasted with the really huge Kane. While they both made the occasional questionable decision, Kane's were so consistently moronic as to fall into TSTL territory.

Pacing: I don't know. After the first 50-100 pages, I was mostly skimming.

Oh, and a lesson to me to read the back of a book before buying it--this is apparently a not-so-secret pregnancy story, complete with graphic childbirth scene, repeated descriptions of breast-feeding and a super-baby. Really not my thing, but if you like your romances based around pregnancy and babies, you might be more inclined to like this whole story than I did.

Ruthless Game is book 9 in Christine Feehan’s Ghost Walkers series. Although this is my least favorite of her series’, Ruthless Game is probably my favorite of the nine books so far.

The Ghost Walker series is sort of a techno-thriller/romance series – concerning a group of genetically enhanced “super soldiers,” with a wide range of special psychic and physical abilities. In most of the past eight books I’ve found myself skipping through the military missions and focusing in on the romance aspects, because that’s what Christine Feehan does so well: romance. Ruthless Game was a bit different for me though, and I read it cover to cover without skipping so much as a word.

The key in Ruthless Game was the heroine Rose: I loved her from the moment I “met” her and couldn’t wait to see what happened when she was reunited with Kane, the Ghost Walker she had been paired with. Maybe it was the added fact that she was pregnant, and then had a newborn to contend with (along with constant threats on her life and the lives of her loved ones,) but for whatever reason, Rose and Kane along with baby Sebastian, quickly became my favorite Ghost Walkers.

The Ghost Walker series, like all Feehan’s series’, only get better with time. She’s one of the best romance series authors out there and I have become a huge fan over the last few years. She continues to introduce new characters in each book and those characters will show up in their own books later on in the series. My favorite books are the ones like Ruthless Game, which bring old and new characters together like a fantastic family reunion. I am excited to see where Christine Feehan will take her series next.

This is probably the most disappointing book of the series. Feehan can be a great storyteller, but this book offered nothing new or overly interesting to the Ghostwalker story. I can usually overlook the faults of the book because I like her characters well enough, but I really disliked Rose and Kane. Yet again, I feel like the characters had nothing new to offer to the series.
