I've wanted to read this for a long time. I Read a weird novel awhile back about Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens that involved a train wreck and opium dens and possibly hypnotism. And it was supposedly happening while Collins was writing the Moonstone. I listened to this book on the podcast Phoebe Reads a Mystery during the pandemic of 2020. It was kinda like reading it serialized in a magazine, much like many novels of that era.

I will try this one again, but I just couldn't get into. I love The Woman in White, so I expected to enjoy this to, but it didn't hold my attention.

A classic mystery (the first) involving different POVs, plot twists, and an overall enjoyable mystery.

I'm very glad I finally had a chance to pick this up!

I can't set aside how firmly rooted this is in colonialism and racism but otherwise I really enjoyed this. It's funny and smart and a good mystery. I listened to the version narrated by Peter Jeffrey, which was fantastic. It really brought out the humour.
