A brilliant literary work in the strictest sense of the word. The language was unequivocal, and the plot was gripping with interesting, stolid English characters.

I was surprised how intriguing and enjoyable this was. It started a bit slow and confusing with many disconnected details, but the author managed to weave them together into a suspenseful mystery worthy of modern detective dramas. Perhaps a bit long, but the last 5 hours especially were enthralling and kept me guessing the whole way.

This was actually the first classic that was written in Victorian English that I would consider a page-turner.
Collins keeps you hooked to the story by slowly revealing the clues and information. The story is also told by different characters, which makes the story feel fresh througout. You basically get a different writing style everytime you finish one of these narratives.
It seems that this was considered as the first full size detective novel. (I can understand that we don't have any detective novels from eions ago, as there wasn't a profession that could be considered detective back then.) Keeping this in mind, you can definitely tell how much influence this novel has had on the modern books and tv-shows. The way in which Collin unfolds the mystery has been repeated time and again in other great detective stories.
The loyal and easy to love servant Betteredge kept on mentioning passages from Robinson Crusoe. Although I probably won't regard it as a book of almost holy status, I'm definitely tempted to put that one on my classics TBR as well :)

Many years ago when I was wee, I was first introduced to this story through a abridged reenactment performed by Wishbone the dog. I enjoyed it back then and I've always wanted to get my hands on a copy and read it in its original incarnation. I was quite busy so I decided to hunt down the audiobook to listen to. I loved it but I want to track down text version to see if I enjoy even more when I can focus soley on it.
