Chiusa parentesi.)

While I enjoy reading about Jack Sawyer, I cannot like this book. In theory, I like the idea of travelling between worlds, and the Territories seems like an interesting place, the way it is explained is so weird, I can't grab it. Reading about it feels like I am on some kind of a drug, and I hated it. The characters were really good, wish I enjoyed it more, but it's mediocre at best, and I am being really generous.
Yet another King novel that I've just put off for years. Why? I'm basically down to less than 10 King books I've yet to read and they are the ones that tend to be a mixed back when it comes to what people think of them. I had Black House in that category, although I think I'm probably mistaken on that count based on the average rating. But it might also be that Dark Tower fans boost this book's ratings significantly. I imagine if you haven't read the Dark Tower books, this book may be confusing and/or not resonate as strongly.
I was actually a bit surprised by how heavily this book ties into the Dark Tower series. However, I'm glad it did because I love the Dark Tower and it was fun to read the interconnectedness. In some ways, this seems like more of a Dark Tower book than it does a Talisman book. But the ties to Talisman are very obviously there as well, namely the main character, Jack Sawyer, and his ability to flip between our world and the Territories.
All in all, this book was pretty good and a must if you're a Dark Tower fan.

Black House was our first book for the book club. Being the Dark Tower junkie that I am, I want to read everything that is vaguely connected to it. Black House doesn’t just references the beams or breakers, it is actually about the breakers! Slow to start but the characters are developed incredibly. I wonder which parts Straub wrote and which parts King wrote.

What a treat! I thought I'd never read about the Dark Tower universe after having finished the series. It's different from The Talisman, but in a good way. I'm only wondering how Straub feels writing about something that ties in so cleartly with King's world. Anyway, only a couple of SKs left before I've read them all...
After the wonder of Talisman, this book was a disappointment. It did not have the depth, the imagination or excitement that the Talisman did. It was not the worst book, but following such an amazing tale, it makes it pale drastically in comparison. If you are a big King fan, do not beat yourself up if you skip out on this one.

Black House is surprisingly good. While this novel is not commonly ranked among King's finest, it deserves praise. I prefer it its predecessor The Talisman, though that is a good novel as well. Where Black House succeeds over The Talisman is that I preferred the detective mystery angle of this novel over the adventure fantasy angle of The Talisman. The Dark Tower novels are pretty necessary reading for Black House and fans of that series will find this novel a good addition to the cannon.
