I enjoyed the book a great deal for what it was, but having not read any of the Dark Tower series, I got the sense that I knew *just* enough about it, by recognizing some character names, to realize that I probably would have gotten even more out of this book had I read the Dark Tower books first.

This books was fine.  It is the second book (and last) in the Talisman duology.  I listened to it and it passed the time, but I did forget that it was the second book in the Talisman which I really didn't like.  I got through it, but it was a bit of a trudge.  I do like the narrator he chose for this series - that helped.  The Black House is actually a very small part of this book - it was very confusing.  It is a bit rambly and I had a hard time caring about the characters.  I have found that books that have more than one author don't work for me.

Cool narrative style, very engaging read, but a seriously slow start. Read like a crime novel, dark tower adjacent

Stephen King should really write more sequels b/c my goodness he's so good at them. They are some of his best books. I'm not sure why it took me so long to read these two books but I'm glad I didn't have to wait 20 years between them. And to that end, if someone had told me this one had Dark Tower ties I would have read it a lot sooner. But alas better late than never. I think my favorite part about this sequel is that The Territories don't really dominate the story like it did in the first one. It's very much part of the story but it isn't THE story and I thought that was really cool. This book also has an odd narration style - I'm sure there's an actual literary name for whatever it is but I'm not sure what it's called. There were times I enjoyed it but there were definitely also moments where I didn't and most especially at the beginning. It took me a good 50 pages to wrap my head around what I was reading at the opening of this book. Thankfully, once I got myself on level ground, it really took off. The story is just so damn good and without getting into any spoilers, the way it weaves itself into the fabric of The Dark Tower is so brilliant and just incredible fun for the long time SK reader the way any of his many books that touch TDT are. I can't explain why it took me over a month to finish it b/c I loved it the whole way, but so it goes. I'm also doing a re-watch of my favorite show LOST right now and there's so much Stephen King sprinkled throughout that show both in literal books and story and in themes and inspiration. I'm pretty damn sure we got Jack and Sawyer out of Jack Sawyer from these books. And that's pretty fucking cool. And the characters are so damn interesting from the really good ones (Jack, Henry, Dale, and Sophie stick out the most as favorites) to the evil ones and all the in-between. Hell, even bit characters like Rebecca Vilas come off the page pretty interesting - at least to me. I also really loved when Henry is playing DJ at the old folks home - just the description of it all was mesmerizing to me, especially as a vinyl fan. And the coolest part about fun scenes like that were - they weren't fluff - they really served a purpose. Lastly, obviously Straub deserves a part of the credit here and who knows, maybe even a lot of it, but b/c it's tied to TDT and my own biases of SK being my favorite author, it still comes off as a King book in my mind, right or wrong, but hats off to both of them. Excellent novel. Job well done. It's a PHENOMENAL read.
