"I had a pretty significant choice to make. Lie down and die. Or don't."

I love a good mystery and I love noir, but I didn't love this. I really wanted to and it had a good start, but it was incredibly slow and I finally gave up about half way through it.

Suspenseful and witty. I’ll be reading more by Gregg Hurwitz.

The first 1.5 - 2 hours were a bit slow and thought about stopping, but once Chick was introduced it picked up and I enjoyed.

(3.5) With a slow start and at times dialogue or thoughts that felt forced this isn't quite my favorite of the genre but it certainly has something to offer.

I picked this book to get a feel of Hurwitz's writing, as I am not yet ready to commit to a new series (Orphan X). I agree with my GR friends that Hurwitz CAN write. The murder mystery was done well. Throughout we are left guessing whether Drew really killed his ex-girlfriend or if he was framed. I can't say the plot was entirely original and it had some far-fetched elements too. Though the writing was excellent, the description of the city was too descriptive. and philosophical.
As most of the reviewers said, this may not be the author's best work, but it has certainly pushed me to read more of his books.

This thriller had some good moments, but it was a lot of cliche and predictability along the way.

An interesting mystery with enough red herrings and possible suspects to make it difficult to see the culprit clearly early on. The gripping question of what the main character, Drew, did on the night his ex-fiancee died is a wonderful second mystery to be chipping away at.

Overall, the writing is good. Not nearly as strong as the Orphan X novels, but this was written much earlier. There are some scenes, though, that I skimmed because of the endless navel-gazing. One such is a pages-long critique of all the young Hollywood hopefuls waiting to get inside of clubs. (How did that not get edited down? Ugh.)

I've really enjoyed the Orphan X books by Gregg Hurwitz so when I saw I wanted to try some of his other works. This is completely different but right from the start I was hooked. I loved the writing style, the plot, the way things moved along, the humour, everything. The main impression it left me with was "Wow!". Definitely looking for more from Gregg.

The only negative is a pet peeve of mine: I hate when authors rename their books so the same book appears as 2 different titles, I See You aka The crime Writer. Come on, stick with one title, don't try to confuse your readers.

I was enthralled by The Crime Writer. From the opening sentence until the conclusion Hurwitz had me. The characters were all great, antagonist, protagonist and everyone in between. They are pitch perfect, his cast of friends including disgraced Dodger Chic Bales, and his editor Preston are wonderful side kicks, friends, and voices of reason. I recommend this book to just about anyone. Most especially fans of character driven thrillers.
