I couldn’t put this book down, and really enjoyed the dark humor and increasing tension of the plot. The ending of the book was not what I was expecting. It was bizarre, and felt out of sync with the rest of the story. Still, I think this was a really clever depiction of the struggles of motherhood, isolation, and shifting identities.

If you’re a fan of Grady Hendrix, I think you’d enjoy this book.

I really liked the beginning; it was a solid start. However, the further I read, the more tired (and slightly bored) I felt. Sadly, I just lost interest in a story and themes, which on paper–female rage, art, a female weredog, transformative magic–I should've thoroughly enjoyed. This book would have definitely benefited from a massive edit (i.e. cutting out many repetitive plot points) to turn it into a novella. Also, I didn't care that much for Nightbitch's child; he was too prominent a character.
A moment of silence for the dead cat and bunnies. Was that really necessary, Yoder?

Started out kinda weird but interesting, but got pretty unhinged at the end and I'm not sure if I liked it.

Might end up being 5 stars—I really loved this. I don’t know what it is about the combination of magical realism and social commentary on motherhood that’s been scratching the right itch for me but between this and Fever Dream (wildly different book but also fantastic), I’m hooked. This must be what it means to be an animal, to look at another and say, I am so much that other thing that we are part of one another. Here is my skin. Here yours. Beneath the moon, we pile inside the warm cave, becoming one creature to save our warmth. We breathe together and dream together. This is how it has always been and how it will continue to be. We keep each other alive through an unbroken lineage of togetherness.

Keeps you guessing, that’s for sure. I found it a tad self indulgent; saying what the message is supposed to be rather than simply showing you. Thought-provoking and deeply important messages about women and motherhood are present even if overshadowed at times by a “self aware” style that turns annoying.
