Really it’s probably 3.5 ⭐️. There was a lot of repetitiveness that could have easily been left out. We got the point the first dozen times some things were mentioned. I liked the relationship between Sena and her wolf, and I liked Remy. I will read book 2 and see if it’s any better.
The Hunger Games meets Call of the Wild. I love stories about survival and found families, and this was a perfect fit.
I was so excited for this YA fantasy debut!! The cover is AMAZING and the concept seemed so great: a dystopian ice planet world, a young girl, a wolf, a dogsled race all while fighting for survival against fantastical foes. Sadly the pacing of the story was REALLY slow, the race doesn't even happen until just after half way through. The friendship between Sena and Iska (the wolf she rescues from a prize-fighting ring) was the best part of the story for me. I also really enjoyed the world building - the story is definitely atmospheric. Overall if you're looking for a fantasy blend of Balto and Call of the wild this story might appeal. For me it was just an okay read that I felt could have used some romantic elements. In any case I do look forward to seeing what's next by this author and it was good on audio.
DNF at 80 pages.
Something about this book just wasn't working for me. I picked it up because the cover was giving me perfect snowy day vibes. I was excited to see how wolves played into this world. However, I felt super disconnected with the main character Sena. By 80 pages in I wasn't really invested in what was going to happen to her or this wolf race so I decided to move on to move on to other books.

This one took me by surprise. I had no idea what to expect and I loved the adventurous tale that unfolded. Sena’s relationship with the wolf will pull you through the story as she learns how to find a family.
The frozen planet/sci fi element feels a little forced, but overall this is a great book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review
When the publisher reached out to offer me an early copy, I could not say no. Now I don’t read the synopsis of a book often, but this one immediately caught my attention. I mean wolves, a race, and found family? How could I not want to read that?
However, I had so many issues with the pacing. It felt like it took FOREVER for the actual race to start. And then it was over before I knew it. I was so looking forward to this epic snow race but was let down. I barely had time to process what happened.
And I can honestly say, I don't remember the characters at all. Nothing about them especially the main character stuck out to me. They just all blur together at this point.
I just wanted and expected more.

What if the Iditarod was what an entire planet’s economy revolved around? That is what this book is asking. A fun tale of the “lone wolf” befriending a literal wolf and fighting for identity. And YA was the perfect fit for this tale. Excited for the next one!
This is futuristic story that takes place across the universe on a distant planet. Every year the is a dog sled style race that brings people from all different planets to compete or watch. At the end of the race there is a dig site that has valuable resources. However, instead of sled dogs we think of today, they race a genetically enhanced team of wolves’ mixes. The main character of the story, Sena, lost everything she had to this race five years before when her mothers competed to earn enough money to start over somewhere new but lost their lives instead. Because of this Sena vows to having nothing to do with the race or the wolves used for it. This is until she crosses the syndicate boss whom has a wolf she agrees to help. When everything goes wrong Sena must choose between helping a group of researchers and brave the tundra’s harsh landscape and a chance off the planet or go face what’s waiting for her back home.
I can’t put into words how much I loved this story. It’s fast paced and full of action. The whole story is action scene after action scene. Sena herself is courage’s grows so much throughout the story. The whole story is not just about the race but this world as a whole and a look at how the future could be. The author made a completely new world using animal and landscape we already have in existence but changed some parts to make them something new. As sad when I reached the end of the novel because I enjoyed it so much. It’s the kind of story that pulls you out of a reading slump.
Sci-Fi fans along with fantasy fans will really enjoy cold the night, fast the wolves.
