I think this is my favorite book I’ve read in 2021.
The world building in this story is impeccable, from the city to the frosty planet to the dangerous things in the woods. At first, I had some concerns about the fighting wolves, but the way Iska is portrayed had my pit bull loving heart grown three times its size. She’s a wolf, but the portrayal of her as a prized fighter but also the Goodest Girl Ever is perfect.
I was on the edge of my seat as soon as I began reading, but the racing had me holding my breath. CTNFTW is not for the faint of heart, and is super action packed from start to finish.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“Two girls and a wolf standing down the darkness.”
This story genuinely took me by surprise with its fast-paced and emotionally crafted plotline. Most survivalist-based stories take their time to drive things to slow desperation, but this book was desperate from the start. The stakes felt high, and Long managed to prevent that from getting old. The relationship between Sena and Iska the wolf made me feel so much more than I expected. The world was written in such a fantastic way, I felt like I could taste the snow while I was reading (on a very hot Texas summer day!).
I am so excited to get a final copy of this when it releases in 2022. The found-family aspects had me crying. The world and its horrors, both human-made and not, had me on the edge of my seat. Not only is Sena a fantastic character to read, but our side characters were also lush and full of life to read. This was hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year.

Loved this.
It is no surprise that my favorite character is the wolf. I enjoyed the story, but the pacing was a bit inconsistent like other reviews have said. I also have so many questions about the people that were left behind. In first person present tense I get that we only get to see what the main character sees, but it seems like a convenient way for the author to notnhave to answer questions too

The world building was great and I loved the concept, and Sena is fierce and strong. But she’s also, well, really, really stupid. For such an amazing thief she never once gets away with anything, and the whole idea that she would steal from the safe that Kalba (not sure how to spell his name) keeps is dumb. She wasn’t in that dire of straits. She had to have known it would risk her aunt. A lot of those parts felt very forced—but I *loved* everything Iska! In the next book, more wolves please!

Great YA book! One thing I loved is that friendships take the forefront in this book, not romance. I think this is so important for all young adults but especially female identifying young adults to read.
Snowpiercer meets Call of the Wild. Or maybe as I-Fi Iditarod? First half a tad slow, but the second is all hold onto your hats! Wolf does not die.

4.5/5 Stars
Copig with the deaths of her mothers, 17 year old Sena has turned to pickpocketing in the hopes of gaining enough money to escape the ice-covered planet she lives on. When she is caught by one of the gang bosses, he gives her no choice but to nurse his prize fighting wolf back to health or join his racing team. Sena wants nothing to do with the races that killed her mothers, and so she decides to escape with the wolf instead.
I was initially drawn to this book because of the gorgeous cover... and I can't believe this is a debut novel! I enjoyed this so much, I flew through this in one day because I was so invested in this survival story. The world building is so well done, and you can vividly picture the cold, harsh planet this race takes place on. I also loved the descriptions of all the killer animals and predators lurking this planet. I loved Sena as a main character. She was so bas-ass, and I loved how head-strong and stubborn she was. I will say that she makes ALOT of silly decisions, but you can't help but root for her while she makes them. Iska and Sena's bond was so intriguing, watching them slowly learn to trust and care for one another was so nice to read about. I love books with animal companions so I was all for this. The found family was so well done, and I loved the relationships Sena developed with her racing team. Remy was definitely my favourite of the bunch. The plot begins a bit slow, but does pick up towards the middle of the book. Once the race begins, it becomes so fast-paced and thrilling. I could not stop flipping the pages.
I'm defnitely looking forward to future books from this author!
