Ahoy there me mateys! I received an eArc of this romance novel through NetGalley in exchange for me honest musings. Though this log’s focus is on sci-fi and fantasy, this Captain does have broader reading tastes. So occasionally I will share some reads that I enjoyed that are off the charts (a non sci-fi or fantasy) . . . .
I don't read romance and I know nothing about hockey but Kelley Armstrong has won me over! This is a second chance romance between Gemma and Mason who met in kindergarten, had crushes in high school, and then lost touch.
Gemma married, divorced, and now her first romance novel is coming out - one where the asshole main character just may be based on Mason. Mason is a star hockey player with a string of one-night stands who doesn't do romance because that would interfere with the game. After being forced to see each other for a media opportunity where the audience thinks the two are adorable together, both their publicists want them to fake-date. Gemma can sell more books and Mason can redeem some bad team publicity.
I thought this book was so much fun. I found that Gemma and Mason had fantastic chemistry. It was great to see two people who had past mistakes learn, grow, and, above-all, actually communicate with each other. I was actively rooting for them the whole time. Mason's crush on Gemma was adorable. Watching Gemma regain her own agency was fantastic.
This book was also funny in so many ways. Both Mason and Gemma have grandmother's that are present and heart-warming. Gemma's family is so supportive and emotionally available. The descriptions of the plot of Gemma's book were so humorous and Mason's responses to it even better. The banter between the two characters was sweet, silly, and sexy. Also this book cleverly comments on all sorts of romantic tropes. It had me smiling so very much.
This book does take suspension of disbelief, especially towards the end of the book and money does make many things better. But I now know that I do like romance when Kelley Armstrong is the one writing it. Arrr!

A fun romantic comedy. A little over the top and fa-fetched but that’s how we like them! Author Daphne can’t get her works published. In desperation she creates a male persona to submit her book: Zane Remington. All is good until the publishers arrange for photos and interviews. Daphne hires Chris an accountant and sometimes amateur actor to play the role of Zane.
