I read this book over two days while stuck inside my house with the flu. I picked it up at the library on the recommendation of a friend who is an avid reader. The vignettes were brutally honest and real. Ordinary lives of ordinary people grappling with one demon or another.

I’m surprised this received so many accolades tbh.

I enjoyed some of the chapters, but others just dragged on. Some of them seemed so awkward. There were very realistic and unrefined descriptions of people, which is rare. But, to me, not every character was worth being written about.

It was a pretty easy read though. I read this and a book of short stories at the same time. I honestly think it served the book for me to read it spread out over several days

A beautifully written book by my gosh I don't see eye to eye with a single one of the cynical characters in this book. Especially not Olive Kittridge with her mindset of misery loves company and everyone is harboring sadness and resentment. Just not for me.

There are many characters and living situations throughout this small town Maine. What connects them is the local high school Math teacher. Some like her, some are scared of her, and some love her. This is not a light hearted read. You are taken to the depths of personal despair, suicidal thoughts, complicated parental relationships, desires for a better life, and oblivion to an individual impact on others.

Hated it at first because of how unlikeable the main character is, but I ended up enjoying it - Olive doesn’t really get more likeable but you end up having such a deep understanding of her character and her context that it becomes a very interesting read.
