Probably a 3.5. I'm a little torn on this book. Some of it was so interesting and endearing. But for a shorter book, it felt like it took so long to read. I picked up Olive Again and plan to read it as well. The writing is decent. There's just something I can't put my finger on.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. The many characters of Crosby, Maine are so rich and realized that I look forward to visiting them again in Strout's recent sequel.

I really wanted to read this book before I tried to watch the film version. Also, I had seen all the acclaim that it received. I listened to the audiobook version.
I really enjoyed the picture painted of Crosby, Maine and life there. The characters are described very well. However, Olive is a bit tough to love in my opinion. In particular, I was really sad about the relationship that she has with her son. Her thorny exterior just makes me so sad for her. Well-intentioned, but so opinionated and sometimes harsh it made even listening to this book a bit cringe-worthy at points.
I suppose the latter half of the book just struck me as so terribly sad and a harsh statement on ageing with many of the hardships she endures and some of the choices she makes which just seem to make them tougher. It's interesting how her husband was such a bright spot when she seems ot be a rather tough nut in the large scheme of things.
