Think Hallmark movie- poorly developed and rather flat characters who are allegedly 30 something but very much give 50 something. The plotlines are rushed and implausible, even for this genre. If you want saccharine and superficial, it's not a bad read.
I adored this sweet book, which is a great summer romance that is perfect to take on holiday with you. I loved everything about the book, and the audiobook narrator was superb.
Bree, Mikki and Ashley work in The Boardwalk Bookshop in California, right beside the sea. The bookshop is very busy and they all do a great job running it.
Throughout the story, we are taken into their three personal lives, especially that of their romantic lives. Each of them have their own chapters in the book, and we are taken on a journey with them. They have all been hurt in the past, so we are shown their delicate sides, their failures, their journeys to opening up to love, and their friendships and romances blossoming. There is so much in this well-rounded book, and it is just heartwarming, emotional, uplifting, and full of love. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing, and Netgalley for an ARC of this book! I’ve willingly read and reviewed it. All opinions are my own.
I’ve read a ton of books written by Susan Mallery and THE BOARDWALK BOOKSHOP will definitely please her loyal readers.
I loved the three storylines: Bree is a widowed bookstore owner (the titular Boardwalk Bookshop) who shares a retail space with divorced Mikki who runs a gift shop, and Ashley, a bakery owner in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend. The friendship between the three women, though new, was one of my favorite parts of the book!
While the book was interesting and kept my attention, I wish it had been split up into a three-book series. It felt as if the relationships these three women found themselves in and their respective challenges were never explored deeply enough for me to feel any sort of connection between the love interests or to get a grasp on who the characters really were.
Also, and perhaps I’m not the book’s normal demographic, but the characters are around my age range (late twenties to early forties) and they all acted and spoke as if they were 20-30 years older. Even their parents who would be around my parents’ ages seemed aged up.
So, while the bones of the story were definitely there and enjoyable, I wish they had been fleshed out more to give a better picture of these characters.

Looking for a story featuring a bookshop, in a glorious Californian location? I have this amazing new release to recommend to you!
The beautiful picture on the cover is exactly as I imagined the Bookshop to look after the vivid image created by this author. If I am honest with you, I judged this book by its cover! I am so pleased I did...The Boardwalk Bookshop tell the story of 3 friends, Bree, Mikki, and Ashley, all on their journey, growing and learning about themselves, love, and life. All 3 of these characters, despite being individuals and unique from each other, are brilliantly created, making them appealing to readers. Their strong bond is evident early on. I felt like they had become my friends by the end of this book.
A story of friendship, love and of course books - giving a clear message about how they are more than simply something to be read, they can also bring people together. As a certified bookworm, I adored this read, with its warmth and charm, this is one you do not want to miss. I have not read anything by this author before, but I will certainly be reading the next book, due for release in October. Her writing style is easy to follow, with a plot that flows well, keeping the reader entertained and invested.
Complete with book group questions at the back of this edition, this would make an ideal book club read. Perfectly time for the summer - this is a must-read for fans of this genre!
(Thank you, Mills and Boon, for a gifted copy of this book, in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. All opinions are my own.)
