Ah, Yi City, my favorite Wei Wuxian & the juniors arc! He’s such a delight in his full-on teacher mode, sharp and shrewd and fun! I bet the Lan ducklings have never had a teacher like him and they’re completely enamored. Jin Ling gets more screen time, and I love how it’s clear he has traits from both of his Yunmeng uncles: his temper comes straight from JC but his cleverness comes from WWX (loved how WWX’s “how did you recognize me?” and JL’s “are you Wei Ying?” were both sudden non-sequiturs; parallels!).
And guess who else is enamored? Our shining Hanguang-jun! There is a lot of meta floating around about how Wei Wuxian isn’t actually oblivious, he just literally hasn’t had time to process anything which is why his bisexual awakening might seem delayed. But boy he’s awake now! Kisses! Paperman kisses! Feeling shame for the first time!
To be completely honest, I can understand why some people think that the Yi City arc and especially the past (via empathy) part is needlessly long, and while it adds to character depth, it doesn’t really add anything vital to the main story. That said, I do love it. I don’t care that it’s a short story MXTX transplanted here because it’s so freakin’ tragic! Other than that, ye dogs the whole Xue Yang thing is disturbing. Nailing dead cats around, slaughtering people, and his creepy hero worship for Wei Wuxian and even creepier thing for Xiao Xingchen…sheesh.
There’s a lot of general cultivation world lore and sect politics in this one, covering corruption, greed, ignoring the common people, and Jin Guangyao’s watchtowers (which are actually a pretty damn good idea). A lot of the dialogue seems to have been lifted straight from the novel into the drama which is obvs awesome.
Empathy on Nie Mingjue’s head offers insight on Meng Yao’s history, how he met Nie Mingjue and why he was promoted, how much Nie Mingjue appreciated him for his skills and didn’t give a flying fuck about his background, and how incredibly much it hurt and enraged him when Meng Yao betrayed his trust. There’s also interesting glimpses of how Wei Wuxian was viewed at the time (with added commentary of present-day Wei Wuxian scoffing how the appreciation turned into vilification the moment the war was won), and Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen’s general talk about how Lan Wangji feels about Wei Wuxian (and his choice of cultivation path). Obviously Wei Wuxian’s own cringe at his past self is hilarious.
