My least favorite OV read, I’m sad that I didn’t like it.

"The ice retreats, the ground beneath him red and ochre as if an enormous mammal had been opened at his feet."

There were a few quotes that resonated, but in comparison to Night Sky with Exit Wounds, this book ultimately fell a little flatter for me than expected. I understand that the highly stylized formatting of Vuong's poetry adds meaning to his work, but in this case, it almost felt like a roadblock to accessing the pure, palpable feelings that normally underly his prose. Some of the lines also felt too on-the-nose and almost contrived, but at the same time I can respect Vuong's honesty to his experience and his artistic instinct in this sense.

i love words that make me feel like i'm dying

ocean vuong's writing makes me believe we're actually of stardust, you feel your significance with every word. he makes you feel powerful in a very quiet, almost tranquil, way; where you find the courage to say i am allowed to take up space, i'm allowed to exist where i am.

A very beautifully written book. You can feel the emotion coming through the writing. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I found some of the poems formats were difficult for me to read (perhaps because I read as an ebook.) I’d prefer them to be consistent throughout the book, however, poetry being such a personal interpretation, warrants the individuality expressed. My rating is actually 2.75 stars, obviously closer to 3, so my rating given is 3.
