A young EMT named Casey Brink witnesses Robotman being hit by a garbage truck and she's pulled into the maelstrom of weirdness that is... the Doom Patrol!

Here we are, another decade, another Doom Patrol book. The Doom Patrol went from being DC's version of the Fantastic Four in the 60s to being the book that put Grant Morrison on the map in the early nineties. There were a few more attempts at a Doom Patrol series after Morrison's but they weren't very memorable, although I still remember the landfill full of Robotman parts behind Doom Patrol headquarters during Keith Giffen's run.

Anyway, the weirdest super heroes in the room are back. And much like the Grant Morrison days, I was only half aware of what was going on. That being said, I did enjoy myself in a nostalgic sort of way.

Robotman is still the most normal member of the Doom Patrol and my favorite. He's like Moe of the Three Stooges, struggling to keep the group together. From being hit by a garbage truck to stomping off to go find some pants, Robotman is the hilarious grumpy uncle of the team. I also liked Negative Man getting back to something resembling the version I was familiar with, though Larry wearing Rebis' shades was a nice touch. And what the hell is up with the Chief, Niles Caulder? Hell, that alone makes me want to get the second volume.

Much like [b:Shade, the Changing Girl, Volume 1: Earth Girl Made Easy|33233008|Shade, the Changing Girl, Volume 1 Earth Girl Made Easy|Cecil Castellucci|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1490501603s/33233008.jpg|53944270], I felt like this book was laying the groundwork for the series, integrating Space Case with Robotman, Flex Mentallo, Negative Man, and Crazy Jane. However, I didn't find it nearly as accessible as Shade.

While it wasn't as enjoyable as I'd hoped, I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of the series. Three out of five stars.

My introduction to the Doom Patrol team. Thankfully it introduces new characters alongside old ones through bringing the team back together. I don't feel like I missed out on the past history, as the story is definitely a new introduction. Fun adventures and world building, half an arc that leads into Nada.

It's hard to say anything about a tory as weird as this one, even more when it was written by one my favorite singers, Gerard Freaking Way, mostly, because I didn't understand half of what is happening, just as he said at the end of the book.
This is like the starngest sex I had with a comic book. I couldn't put it down since the beggining, and had to actually force myself to do it so I could sleep a little. I wasn't thinking on next morning and that I would need myself to be able to work, to be able to walk even, but only that I wanted to know what the heck was happening next. This is so addictive it shoud be illegal, really.
There are a few ideas that become clear and understandable, proposals that I gave me little problem, if no one at all, but the others were just so strange and bizarre I couldn't get them. This may be because it's the first volume, the first real chapter of this story, which has been promoted as with "the weirdest heroes," and sure Way kept himself loyal to the idea, so it may be right for him to help newcomers to understand a little bit more of what's going on.
Now that I touched the point, I need to say that I knew nothing, absolutely nothing, of these guys, the Doom Patrol, but the concept is great. A Western, American, old-style comic book that reminds me of American Uglies with a high dose of SciFi and absurd humor. Despite the fact that it's hard to follow, you still manage to find the greatness on it, you get really into it and entertains more than you might expect.
I'm not part of those who like the art, but considering the tyle, the tone and the real nature of this comic book, well, it the best one you can use. There are some panels and pages that impressed me, like the one with people coming out of one Danny to get into the other right next it, or the very first page, which I love because... I'm still trying to know why.
You can expect me to read the next volumes in this book, and know that I had my first time with Way (no pun intended, you dirty minders,) I'm most likely to love them.

I don't know, I didn't like this. I had no idea what was going on 90% of the time, it always felt like I missed reading something. maybe it's the whole deal but it didn't work for me. the art was very, very good tho.

In the intro (or maybe outro? I forget) Gerard Way talks about a fan review where the fan said he didn't know exactly what was going on most of the time, but he had a feeling about what was going on most of the time.

Way liked the review because he felt that it was what he was going for.

So, success in achieving the goal, but...not-as success when it comes to making something I loved.

It's confusing, and now I know it's purposely so. It's meant to be a little wonky, a little out there, and a little hard to parse.

It certainly lives up to the Doom Patrol tradition set by Grant Morrison in that way. Some great stuff, but once in a while you'd kill for something that just is what it is, not something that might be a thing and might be the dream contained in a single tear of a celestial turtle upon whom the entire universe rests. Or something.

Also, within these pages must be the ONLY place someone has gasped and said, "Flex Mentallo can't be dead?" Who the hell is ever going to say that?

I have 0 familiarity with Doom Patrol's past, this is the only volume I've ever read - even without the background information or anything to compare it too, I found this to be highly enjoyable. Yes, it is weird. Yes, it is convoluted. Yes, I was confused a lot. But the graphics were cool, and the writing was fun and interesting. It is immensely quotable and has just enough deep insightfulness to keep this from being a total loss of "trying too hard to be weird-cool." It isn't often that a book/GN has me at this level of lost, but I'm still down for the ride, and enjoying it nonetheless.
