Amelia was such a refreshing main character, she was so pure and wild and I loved her POV. I felt the story itself was good but not as good as other Christina Henry books such as Alice.
I liked that humans became the true evil in this and the entire time it was so easy to see how this really could have happened.

This book SUCKS. This is the worst book I’ve read all year. Why does this have 4 stars??? THIS SUCKED.
The plot is basic as hell (predictable), the writing style is elementary at best, and the author very distastefully mocks Christians which is offensive and irritating.

The Mermaid essentially tells the tale of P.T. Barnum's FeeJee Mermaid as if she had been a real person/mermaid. It is a quick read; interesting and cute. I felt like the ending rushed forward a bit, though, as if there was some hurry to finish the book. An interesting premise and well-written.
Review to follow. (Simple version: LOVED this book.)
This was a cute little story. It's got a great whimsical tone that makes it feel more like fable than fiction. I guess I was a bit disappointed though because I expected a horror story akin to the author's other fantasy books. The biggest horror here was that . Overall a light read, but it did drag at times, especially the mundane interactions with Barnum and planning exhibits.

This novel had an intriguing start; I liked its take on mermaid lore, as well as the title character's agency. However, as the story went on, I started noticing its technical problems: there was a lot of telling rather than showing, repetition, and unnecessary explanations/stating the obvious. Finally, the novel just seemed to fall apart in the last third: the characters started behaving in ways that didn't make sense given how they were written for most of the book, and the plot devolved into a silly Scooby Doo episode, which didn't mesh with the first two thirds of this novel.
Such a magical read and inspiring female protagonist!
