Read in High School

I understand the meaning/main idea of this book but I really didn't like it overall.

Of Mice and Men is a classic work of American literature for a reason. Steinbeck elegantly crafts evocative descriptions of pastoralism and the American dream together with well formed, deep characters in less pages than most books. Steinbeck must have been a master of “killing his darlings”.

Of Mice and Men tells the story of two men, George and Lennie as they travel to and start work as hands on a ranch. But the real story here is not the work they do on the ranch, but the dreams they have for their future, and the realities that stand in their way. Of Mice and Men  is a classic in my opinion because the pain of a lost ambition is a near universal experience, and Of Mice and Men tell the best the story.

It’s that time of the summer where I start to feel bad (who’s judging me? no one probably) that I have read very few classics that were apparently part of everyone’s school curriculum but mine. So, I attempt to fix that. Here is another random burst of motivation to force myself to read crusty old literature that I don’t actually have any interest in reading.

Surprisingly, I liked this one.
