So much said in so few pages! Author Melanie Florence and illustrator Gabrielle Grimard depict the devastation of losing one's native language due to abuse and indoctrination through their stunning lyrical writing and soft watercolour illustrations.

Written in honour of Florence's grandfather, with whom she had a close relationship but never discussed his Cree heritage, the story follows a granddaughter who is curious about her grandpa's native language and how he lost it. The sweet interactions between the characters and the simple language the story was told through made me really emotional! It was a beautiful, heartbreaking, and ultimately, healing story.

Stolen Words is a beautifully bitter sweet story. So needed. I love it. A must have for families and school libraries.

Great opportunity to introduce the topic of residential schools to my youngest two. We recently read a book that mentioned something about that, and this was just expanding on that topic in a very gentle, but also direct way.

I read this to my five year old. In explaining this book, I told him that people can be really mean to each other. When that happens, people get hurt. So, he should always be nice.

**I received this from NetGalley for an honest review. **

Character Development:★★★★★
The two main characters are the granddaughter and the grandpa. This book didn’t need more characters as the subject of the story hit home perfectly.

Flow of the Story:★★★★★
Perfection.

Illustrations: ★★★★★
Beautifully crafted to compliment storyline.

Overall: This children’s book will be going on my “Isle of the Blessed” Goodread shelf meant only for the books that made an emotional impact on my heart. Melanie did an extraordinary job telling a small part of the devastating history of the Native American people.

This was a good book to bring awareness to true unsavory history. I liked the telling of the story, though I kind of was lost in the transition from past to present at times.
