Last book in the Barsoom series (essentially 2 small stories combined). As it was the last book, forced myself through it. Didn't really bring anything new to the series.

This is a wonderful collection of the first three Mars novels!

A Princess of Mars: This is the first and my favourite of the three novels in this collection. The story is wonderfully imaginative and ahead of its time with predictions about the science of the red planet. John Carter is established as a hero for the ages!

The Gods of Mars: This installment has some wonderfully forward-thinking ideas for its time. It deals with religion and race in an interesting way. The language used sometimes seems racist but I believe that's a product of the time in which it was written and not reflective of the book's thesis.

The Warlord of Mars: This novel is my least favourite of the three because it is so focused on war. It is almost wall to wall fighting! John Carter comes off as less heroic and more arrogant in this installment but the cliffhanger ending left me wanting more.

One of the better stories in Skeleton Men of Jupiter, pity it was a cliffhnager ending - more planned that never happened, which is a pity.

Thus ends the war between my sense of taste and my completionism. Who really won here? Not I.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF'd. I do not enjoy Edgar Rice Burroughs writing; I already wasn't really a fan of the Tarzan of the Apes collection from the B&N Leatherbound Classics series, and when I wasn't enjoying these at all either, I decided to put the book down.

I recall that this was made up of two stories. The first was the text of the Little Big Book of John Carter, which I remember being pissed off to find bound for "adult" readers. The second was a partial piece of what promised to be the best John Carter novel in ages, and one I was really sorry to discover was unfinished on ERB's death. Clearly he still had some good JC stories in him.

Tried out this series when I was reading Tarzan novels. Could never get into them, though.

Guy lands on Mars, declares himself in love with the beautiful naked alien princess (who is conveniently human-like, only more naked), then steadily ratchets up the number of locals he kills, all the while complaining their socialist society makes them cold hearted savages.

It reads like Ayn Rand writing The Wizard of Oz.
