7/10 : I almost abandoned this book, it took me a good while to get into the story, at first it didn’t appear to be getting anywhere fast. However, I really loved ‘A Monster Calls’, & never like to give up on a book if I can help it, so having started it earlier in the year, I picked it up again last night, & finished it this morning. The second half reads at a better pace, & is more cohesive, so much so I found I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough! A beguiling tale of teenage angst, but with more substance & philosophy than your standard coming of age novel.

This was my second Patrick Ness book. It was good and an easy read with some good messages about anxiety and mental health with the main characters anxiousness and OCD though I don’t know how accurate the portrayal of OCD is. The beginning felt a bit odd with weird hints at the characters nuances, but it was all vague. The concept was interesting, focusing on being on the sidelines of something big and being involved as collateral. I didn’t hate but didn’t love the character confusion with their own feelings, but it wasn’t extreme for teenagers. The characters were well written overall along the family dynamics involved with their parents. It was a good book that didn’t hook me in any crazy way.

I had the feeling that Ness wanted to stuff too many themes in one book. I liked the characters and the fact that the book dealt with mental illness, but the story wasn't going in a very clear direction for me.

Creative way of spoofing YA tropes while being very authentically YA. Hilarious and poignant. Not Ness’ best but still worth the read.

Loved the concept, but not the execution. The chapter intros about the “indie kids” were fun, but the main story dragged, and I struggled to stay invested. The pacing felt slow, and the characters frustrated me, especially Henna and the questionable Mel/Steve dynamic.

I did appreciate how the book tackled mental health and showed therapy in a positive light. That, and the little nod from the indie kids to the “background” characters, were highlights. Unfortunately, by the time things picked up, I didn’t care anymore.

Started reading, was thoroughly confused by the first part of the first page, but decided to go with it. Everything made sense later on, and then made more sense, and the conversation with Dr. Luther made me want to highlight the entire chapter. Related to Mike wayyy too much that it definitely unnerved me, but this book is great. Definitely one that's going to stick with me for a long while. ;_;

Great characters, great story, and in my opinion, fantastic portrayal of mental health. Though now I kind of want to read the story about Satchel and the second indie kid Finn! Also, thanks for the Finnish people. As we say over here: Suomi mainittu!
