Very slow to take off. It took me some time to get the rhythm of the book and get a connection with the characters. It wasn’t until three quarters of the way through that I became hooked. Overall a good book and a good read, but nothing I would overly rant about.

Wasn't sure about it in the beginning, but I was really enjoying it at the middle point! Not sure if the mental health representation was particularly good but it was interesting. The message was good if a bit contrived.
I don't think the chapter beginnings with the Indie Kids' storyline were particularly important, and I didn't really care for the message with the Indie Kids and how "they're just like us at the end of the day". It also that feels very contrived that these things apparently just happen with every teenage generation.
The point of the story is to follow the characters who live on the edges of the big story, but that doesn't actually make for a particularly satisfying story. It's halfway in and halfway out of something important. Mikey's struggles are clearly big enough that the side plot (if it can even be called that) doesn't seem relevant at all.
The only thing that actually made it a little relevant to them was because of Jared, and the friendship betwen him and Mikey could have easily been explored more in depth than it was. His relationship arc with Henna is sooo boring, however, and I didn't care for it at all.
Overall, Mikey is a really annoying and insecure, jealous boy and that's not particularly interesting. But his mental struggle, his family, his friends were all great character work and they really gave the story the warmth it needed.
