It was quite easy to read and I laughed at some of the satire but I couldn't really enjoy the characters as I found them boring and the story itself mundane which is quite sad. I like the premise but the story fell a little flat, hopefully other people get more enjoyment out of it than me although I would recommend it for a quick read.
“Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing things that are great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.”
2.5 Stars. I am genuinely disappointed in this book. I definitely think I chose the wrong Patrick Ness book to start with. After hearing such good things about the author I decided to give this book a try.
This is a prime example of a great concept with a poor execution.
Pros
- A diverse group of characters with realistic struggles
- An interesting concept
- Lots and lots of humor
- Fairly enjoyable writing style
- Two LGBT characters
- Relatable
Cons
- Pretty much everything else
- The romances were cliche
- The plot twists were predictable
- The formatting of the book was slightly confusing since two stories are going on simultaneously
- The plot fell flat and most of the time the book didn't even seem to have a plot
- Literally not much happened, it was just cliche teenage drama with some random enemy thrown in that has little effect on the main characters because it's literally not supposed to
- It was a fairly boring book about boring characters with boring lives because that is the premise of the book. The kids are the background characters in your average fantasy YA novel and aren't meant to be the heroes of any story.
3.5 funny, light YA read but nothing to write home about
a really great concept that was actually well executed. lost some points for a weird moment of fatphobia and for how much i wanted to kick mikes teeth in sometimes, but i do think this is a book about 17 to 19 year olds where they’re actually written like 17 to 19 year olds

i really liked this
It is like Buffy fanfiction where the story focuses on a random group of students who go to Sunnydale and are vaguely aware of the weird things that happen to the Scooby Gang. Great concept but the execution was pretty meh. The mental health representations and the friendship dynamics were good but the middle really dragged with nothing happening. I want to read another author's take on this.
