Ness doesn't exactly stay in a genre, but that makes his books all the more fun, as long as you're willing to go along for the ride. This perfectly captures that feeling of impending adulthood - kids on the cusp of high school graduation, responsibility, and sometimes badly needed freedom.
The fact that this stage of life happens in a world where supernatural things sometimes happen and most of the time don't is going to draw in some extra readers. "Realistic Fiction" this isn't, but it's not exactly fantasy sci-fi either- it's just life, and if you see Buffy running by, well, give her a wave.

A story about finding out who you are in life, about growing up, about friendship. Oh, and in the background it’s also about an apocalyptic coming together of dimensions. But mostly it’s about being a teenager and all the craziness that comes along with it.
I was just in the right mood for this book! It was delightful. Such a fun, ironic journey.
This book is best summarized by one of the characters (Jared): “Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing the things that see great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.” (P. 216).
Also, I think this is a perfect way to live life.
There were some awkward moments here and there, some poorly designed passages, irritating characters, but the novel’s concept was worth it and made up for the small issues. Lovely book :).
