The Rest of Us Just Live Here
By Patrick Ness
3.25/5 Stars!
All I've heard of Patrick Ness were how wonderful and amazing his books are, so I decided to pick up one of his books and in this case it was 'The Rest of Us Just Live Here'.
This book was something I've never experienced with reading before, because instead of following the storyline of the heroes, it follows the normal people. The people who see everything happen and just have to continue their lives despite the demons, vampires and exploding buildings. At the beginning of each chapter there is a brief overview of what happens to these 'heroes', the so-called 'indie kids', and then the story goes on. This group of friends aka the main characters: Mikey (has anexiety), his sister Mel (used to be anorexic), Henna (being controlled by her parents) and Jared (has some kind of godly powers) just want to graduate, and hope that the school will not explode again before they finish their senior year. Very original (credit to that) and fun, although I do not give it five stars, because the idea of the summary was better than the actual book. The whole plot was weirdly interesting, but it had so many clichés in it.
What I didn't like about this book that the whole store ended with maybe's.

The experience of reading a Patrick Ness book:
"This is so cute!"
"This is fine"
"Oh wait"
"Oh no"
"Ohhhhh nooo"
"OH MY GOD EVERYTHING HURTS"
*1 hour of heaving ugly crying*
Patrick Ness is such a masterful storyteller. He manages to write magical realism contemporaries that appear charming at first, and then sucker punch you in the feels in the final act!
I thought this was just a charming story about a bunch of kids who aren't The Chosen One. Instead, it's a heart-wrenching story about kids who are fearful of the great unknown that is University, who are dealing with relationship issues, jealousy, friendship bust-ups, mental illness, and emotionally unavailable parents.
I simply adored Mikey as a protagonist. He's struggling with an OCD flareup, anxiety, jealousy, and feeling like he's always the least-wanted member of his group. Mikey's struggles spoke to Teenage Me on a molecular level, and Patrick Ness just knows how to write loneliness. Coupled with Jared's future and Mel's eating disorder recovery, there's a lot here that tugs at the heart strings.
I cried non-stop for the final 100 pages. ;___;
While this story focuses on people who aren't The Chosen One, I liked how the chapter headers satirised early 2000s YA fantasy and paranormal. A little bit of zest to go with the feels!
This was such a pleasantly emotional surprise. I want to fold this book up and hold it in my heart.

I love the concept, it's kinda like how your life would be if you are a side character in a YA Fantasy book. They just live there, nothing else. They walk through life like anyone else. They have problems too, they have their own baggage too, they deal with some issues too, they just live there, with an occasionally weird stuff happening around them.
I really love Patrick Ness' writing, I have read [b:More Than This|21969786|More Than This|Patrick Ness|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1398164413l/21969786._SY75_.jpg|22008332] and I absolutely adore the writing style! I wanted to read more by him definitely!
And I dig the audiobook, for real. The narrator voice is just so soothing. I would love to listen to him narrate books forever and ever.

I really like this book. Even though In a lot of ways the book was a satire for a lot of YA books. I fell for the main character, Michael. His imperfections were so raw and real that I didn't care he wasn't the "Chosen One." Michael was just trying to graduate and live his life.
