maybe it just wasn't for me, didnt really like the main character - felt like a lot of what he got didn't feel earned but it had good moments i suppose

I really enjoyed this story. I liked that it was from the point of view of the characters who would usually be on the edge of other stories. You get to see their take on the 'chosen one' indie kids' adventures which often result in the destruction of buildings and other inconveniences. Each chapter starts with a few lines explaining what the indie kids are up to. These often poke fun at the tropes of these kinds of books with gentle humour.

What kept me reading though was the way the book covered mental health. The main character, Mickey, has OCD and his sister has disordered eating. Mickey worries that he is relapsing and he worries about his sister too. Alongside this he is trying to pluck up the courage to ask out his long time crush who is also a long time friend. All of that is before the latest indie kid adventure causes strange happenings.

I thought it was a deft way of covering important and relatable topics within a story that draws readers in.

That title is not kidding, the main characters do just live here.

Don't go into this expecting anything like your standard teen-fantasy fair. This is a coming-of-age story masquerading as one of those and, if you like coming-of-age stories, then it's not a bad one. However, if you're looking for a funny story about a group of normal kids stuck living in a world full of demi-gods and chosen ones, then don't bother because the fantasy elements of this book are cursory at best and it's not going make you laugh.

Instead, the story focuses on a group of five teens getting ready to graduate high school and enter into the adult world. My issue with that is the same issue that I have with most coming-of-age stories A.K.A.the fact that they're often not actually stories. They're more like rambles in which the reader is taken through a series of events that normally take place in the main character's final year of high school. If these stories have unusually strong characters, then this can work, but The Rest of Us Just Live Here stars a strikingly average group of teens who could work just fine in a novel with with a stronger plot, but are not interesting enough to hold their own in a day-to-day lives type of tale. There's not even a good romance subplot.

If you want to read a book about average teen living average lives while the apocalypse is happening in the background, then give this one a go. Otherwise, don't bother.

The concept of "what are all the normal people doing while the chosen one saves the world in highschool" only really has enough in it to be a good Tumblr post, not a whole novel.

A really interesting premise with the focus mainly on the main characters acceptance and understanding of his relationships with the people around him, his struggles with his mental health and the idea that change is always going to happen and there’s no point being afraid of it.
