I’ve read The Nutcracker before but man do I have a bad memory! I forgot how dark the original tale was! I guess the main one I always remember is the movie adaptation of the ballet with Macaulay Culkin in it! Haha (if you haven’t seen that version you have homework!). I just really enjoyed this especially the Audio version with a full cast! I also loved this for a comparison of a current read I have which I should also have a review for that soon! The only thing I couldn’t stand was the over use of the word bosom lol

The Nutcracker is a book to treasure with the whole family. If you are wanting to start a new tradition or continue an old one then you should make sure that The Nutcracker is one of those traditions. This is a classic book. With a great story and breathtaking illustrations.
I definitely was cheering for the nutcracker. He was the silent hero and good guy that won. In this book the mouse king and his army were scary. This was with help from the illustrations. I have not had the pleasure of seeing a live performance of the nutcracker by the ballet but from what I have heard it is wonderful. I can see how the ballet could put a production of this story into a live performance. As again it was due to both the author and the illustrator. What I also enjoyed about this book was reading about the story of how the nutcracker became who he was and the battle that he and Marie fought against the mouse king.

I enjoyed reading the back story to the famous traditional Christmas ballet. I realized how much detail is missing and I can't wait to make this a yearly read. The tale of Princess Pirlipat was just the backstory I needed to understand the feud between nutcrackers and mice. Drosselmier's character was also more interesting to see developed and Marie's wit was hysterical, "Who knows, dear Godfather, if you were spruced up like my dear Nutcracker, and if you had on such lovely, shiny ankle boots, who knows if you wouldn't be as beautiful as he?"
Interesting that the play spends most of its emphasis on the battle and subsequent exploration of the kingdom of dolls rather than the tale of the nutcracker itself which encompasses the majority of the pages of the book.

I was contemplating what to write about this short story but I decided to keep it short and say: the story is magical and very in tune with the Christmas spirit, it does look more appealing either with illustrations or on a movie screen (I have watched several adaptations of The Nutcracker, including cartoon ones when I was a kid, in fact, I think my first contact with the story was from some cartoon adaptation) or a ballet (I have never been to one, but I do wish to go one day).
As for the story itself, it was mediocre in my opinion and didn't stick with me: it was an enjoyable 30-40min read but it does not make me excited to reach for it ever again.
