Nearly Gone

3.8 AVERAGE

This was one of the best books I have ever read! It has mystery with a bit of a nerdy touch! I can't wait to read Nearly Found!

I did not finish this book. I forced myself to read about 100 pages in and then stopped. I'm wondering if the people on the back of the book are paid to write those glowing blurbs?! While the idea was kind of intriguing- hence my check out of the book- it was not well executed. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief if the characters are likable or the plot has some kind of forward motion, but this was just too clunky and well out of the realm of believable. I would not bother. The cover was good though.

Nearly Boswell has turned social invisibility into an art. Living in a trailer park, stripper mother, vanished dad, and high IQ - all of these things spell “walking target” until she can score a scholarship and get out of town. Her only indulgence is reading the personal ads on Fridays hoping for a message from her long-gone father, and that’s where she finds the cryptic messages that turn out to be clues about vicious attacks on students at West River High.
Nearly Gone starts slow, freighted with silent conversations and minute observations of every gesture and capillary response. Nearly has the ability to “taste” the feelings of others through touch, recalling novels such as Lisa McMann’s Wake and Maggie Steifvater’s The Raven Boys. Her ability is strangely underutilized, and this, together with other inexplicables (Nearly doesn’t have a cell phone until late in the book, and then keeps leaving it places) gives the plot a forced feel. However, once the plot builds momentum and the bodies start piling up, it’s a race to the finish.

for Booklist

So. This book.
Much love.

Usually when I read mystery books, I try to figure out whodunit as I read. Sometimes I figure it out; when i don't figure it out I get super happy. Yeah guess what? SUPER HAPPY!!!!!

Read it.

Popsugar: "Book set in high school"

MINDBLOWN!
SO SO SO SO GOOD
this is a mystery/suspense YA novel done right.
PLL writers should learn from Elle cosimano. They should take lessons from her on how to do a good job with a suspense story.
Also she's a genius, how she connected the story like that and the plot twist and using school subjects as a developer to the story ahhh.

I swear i picked this book up based on the pretty cover i did not expect that it will hit me like this
I know i took probably 3 months or something to finish it but that's due to my reading slump. I got back to it now that i finished with school and it was just as good

This is so good but i feel like it should've been a standalone because everytbing resolved at the end and it felt like there's nothing left to discuss in future books but i guess not.
I had couple of issues with the main protagonist and also some issues with the paranormal aspect of the novel like i swear it has practically nothing to do with the development of the novel so wjy did she put it there.
Even so this book like every other book on the planet had some flaws. I didn't mind its flaws because of how good the story was and development of it and how the mystery unfolded

Alright. If a book is three dollars, it's probably only going to be worth three dollars. I should accept this and stop picking up books from the sales rack. Nearly Gone is one of the most irritating books I've had the unfortunate opportunity to read. The mystery, by itself, would have been perfectly tolerable, but the romance was absolutely awful.

The Plot: Below Average. The mystery wasn't the worst thing in the world. The problem was that the story didn't revolve around the mystery. It centered on the romance. The logical abilities that should be present in a mystery novel are absent in all the characters. Reece is at every attack and a convicted felon, but does Nearly even consider him a suspect? Of course not.

Reece: The moment we meet Reece is when he trips Nearly and kicks her books out of her reach. I thought to myself, please don't let this be the love interest. And, boy, was I let down.

Nearly: For supposably being a genius, this girl could be compared to a sack of rocks. What's her one rule? Don't let boys come between her and her scholarship. What does she do? That exact thing. She's one of those girls who never puts on anything besides a t-shirt and knows that she is the ugliest person on Earth. But wait! Every male character in this book immediately thinks she's hot! The surprise!

The Romance: The signs of an abusive relationship are not hard to find. Reece isolates Nearly. He gains control over her. He makes her feel bad. He treats her like a child. It's disgusting. At one point, he picks out her clothes for her so she'll "look like his type." He even sexually assaults her in front of the entire school because she might reveal that he is a narc. What does she do when this happens? She lies to the principle and says it's her fault. He takes her to a rave, tells her to stand in a corner, and then makes her feel terrible when she gets drunk and wakes up in a pool of blood. But there must be something deep, deep inside him that redeems him, right? Right? No!

Seriously, just don't read the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book, it captured me from the beginning trying to figure out who could be trying to frame this poor girl. This book is one you don’t want to pass up! Amazing book!
