I didn't know what to expect when I started this book, but it wasn't this.
Nearly Boswell is a poor and smart girl fighting for her one shot to get out of the hell hole that has become after her dad left. There is a scholarship waiting at the end of the tunnel, only she's not the only one needing it. Nor is she the only one smart, dedicated or desperate enough to get it.
She puts up barriers because she's afraid feeling other people's disappointment and anger, but facing murder and threats from a stranger out to get her, her only way to solve the mystery is letting those barriers down and face the reality of her life and herself.
It was slow at first and I was really confused about where the story was heading, hence a lower score but otherwise it was really good. It's similar to Pretty Little Liars with a stranger leaving clues for us and Nearly to solve before the time is up and being framed for all. But we don't have the awesome friends, we have nearly no one and nothing to go on.
I felt that this book could have been a stand alone so I'm a bit hesitant to pick up the second one, it gets too dragged out if it's another murder escapade and maybe a bit out of the blue if it's nothing but a story about a girl and a boy's relationship.
" I wasn't nearly . I was enough."

Spoiler
I had my own theories but I knew it was linked to her father in some way. First I thought it would be Anh since she had a clear motive to scare Nearly to make her lose sight of the scholarship, then I suspected Jeremy because yet again he had an emotional motive to seek vengeance on Nearly for rejecting him. My third theory was someone killing of the children of the gang but no... it was TJ the crybaby. Talk about really blaming someone else, Nearly did not have contact with her father and her mother was a stripper so they could barely live in a trailer park but they weren't suffering enough? Nooo, we have to kill multiple innocent people to make a point and framing Nearly for it? You should have framed her for a murder and be over with!I felt that this book could have been a stand alone so I'm a bit hesitant to pick up the second one, it gets too dragged out if it's another murder escapade and maybe a bit out of the blue if it's nothing but a story about a girl and a boy's relationship.

Hey guys, I think its times to refresh and continue on with book reviews. Things have been a little rough in the book community, but I’m confident things can get back to its happy balance. Today I have a review of Nearly Gone by Elle Cosimano
This book was never really on my radar. I had seen the cover around, but I never took the time to really read the synopsis or dig much into it. I actually had a friend bring it to me one day when we were hanging out and suggested I read it. I usually trust her book tastes, so I decided to dive into it.
This is a story about a girl named Nearly Boswell. I know, strange name right? She has been striving to get herself out of the trailer park that she has been living in with her mother, who is an exotic dancer. Her father left when she was young, so Nearly doesn’t have that much going for her other than the fact that she is really smart and strives to keep her grades up, which doesn’t come without competition. But through her obsession of looking in the personal ads for any sign of her father, Nearly has discovered through cryptic messages that someone may be targeting students at her school. She forms a bond with a new transfer who has a long rap sheet but has a secret identity of working undercover for a police case. Only problem is, Nearly may be the main suspect.
I thought this book would be a good entry for my Halloween Reads. This book is surrounded in mystery, and you’ll spend the entire time trying to figure out who the killer is. I was literally naming everyone as a suspect and trusted no one. Its like a good mystery where you’re one of the investigators. And since you’ll be thinking that everyone is a suspect, you’ll never see who the real suspect is.
The mystery in this book is what really had me hooked. I did, however, have a few problems with the book, mainly with the plot. I felt that there were a few missing details, which I think is kind of a dangerous thing when working with a mystery story. Every little detail becomes important. Its like working a case. You don’t want to miss anything. I also felt like that Nearly’s relationship with the new transfer was a little forced. They’re forced to work together to stay safe, but I never felt like they were together enough in order to form that strong of a bond. It appears as though they suddenly fell for each other (which happens in real life) but usually there are little steps and details that get you to that point.
This book has a bit of a paranormal hint in it. Nearly has this ability to feel others emotions when she touches them. I thought that the book could have done without this ability because I didn't think it really added to the story.
There were also a few issues that were left unresolved, which left me a little disappointed, but I just discovered this is part of a series, so those issues may still be resolved later on. After knowing that, I feel a little more encouraged that I will like the series as it goes on. As a standalone, its missing a few things, but as a series, it can still be potentially strong and get significantly better.

“His emotions were suffocating and heavy, regrets mingled with guilt so deep, I was sure I'd never get the taste off my tongue”
Best mystery ever! I loved everything about this story. I loved working the clues and attempting to figure out the answers as I read. It felt like homework given from that one cool professor! I adored Nearly! If this becomes a series I promise to follow it to the very end. This is one ARC I can't wait to share with a friend so we can have educational conversations about the best parts. The smidgget element of paranormal was the icing on the cake.
THIS BOOK KEPT ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE STORY AND THERE ARE A LOT OF PAGES SO IT WAS A VERY INTENSE TIME FOR ME. Now less euphorically and correctly punctuated: This book caught me by surprise. I was not expecting anything that happened in the story, and I usually call out everything that is going to happen (I even called that Bruce Willis was actually dead on the Sixth Sense-- Sorry for the spoiler). It was such a clever book and the characters are so likeable, even the ones you shouldn't like. It was such a good read.
Didn't actually finish this. I hated it so much. It was almost 400 pages of painfully slow build up, characters making stupid choices, dumb love triangles, unhealthy relationships, over-the-top angst and tragedy, and stuff that could have been cut out to make a more stream-lined novel. Everything about this book was oppressive and I got about 3/4 of the way through and just gave up.
I know a bunch of teens that would love this book, though. I really just did not like it at all.

I didn't know how many bad decisions a main character could make until I read this book.
Also, it's so not okay when a guy forces to kiss you. Best thing of all is that Nearly makes up a story to the principal. What? Why defend the guy?
And it gets better because he tells her what to wear and tries to feel her up. Oh, but don't worry, he was not going to touch her boobs. Yeah no, he just wanted to expose more cleavage. Oh yeah, that makes it so much better! Ladies and gentlemen, what a wonderboy.
I'm absolutely not happy with the message of this book. Fall for a guy who forces to kiss you and dresses you up so you look the part? No, just no. That's not something girls should read. It's just plain out wrong.

I enjoyed that I couldn't finure everything out. I had no idea who the bad guy was going to be. And I liked that the main characters special ability wasn't the focus, but simply a small detail. Refreshing.
After initially reading this, I immediately had it at a 5 star rating but after sleeping on it, I bumped it down to only a 4.
Although, it's definitely still a great book!
I loved Nearly (Leigh) and how she grew throughout the book. The author did a good job with the dialogue and setting up the environment in each scene of the book. It was captivating and held my attention until the very end. Partially because it was so interesting but also because the author gives no hints or spoilers about who did what until the last 20 pages or so. I loved that it made me keep reading so close to the end to get a good wrap up. My ONLY complaint is I feel like it ended almost too much like an after school special, primarily in the epilogue. I kept picturing the characters ending the book in a freeze frame high five. It just felt very much like a TV show ending, very standard. Everything up until that point though was great. The twists and the wrap up were worth it all though.
All in all, a good quick read! Definitely recommend. 4/5 stars. :)
