The only really interesting thing was like two of the characters and the mystery twists.
Other then that it wasn’t anything substantial, and the main character was kind of annoying

Nearly thinks that reading the Missed Connections section of the paper will give her clues as to where her father ran off to years ago. But soon she finds strange clues in the ads and the students she mentors turn up injured or dead. It appears someone is out to get her. Can she track done the killer before he gets to her?
If you love a good mystery, then you MUST read this one. I am looking forward to reading the sequel, Nearly Found. Nearly Boswell lives in a trailer park, with her drunk mother, and no father. She once found an add in the personals that she believes was from her dad, so now she is obsessed with reading them. When classmates start dying, she realizes that she has seen clues in the personal ads, and may be able to find the killer.
This book was really engrossing, and I was hooked from beginning to end. I'm a huge sucker for mystery books, but it has to be well written in order to really keep me committed and this book definitely did that. Character wise, Nearly was interesting, although she was a bit annoying in the beginning of the book but she opened up later on and became more likeable. I also loved seeing how she solved the mystery, and I felt the author was super creative with dropping clues. I'm not a fan of chemistry, but reading this book totally made me want to pull out my periodic table ;)
Reece was also pretty cool, and although I'm wary of the whole "bad boy" trope, he was a really down to earth character and I liked how he was looking out for Nearly. The side characters were pretty thought out, and although there was another character in love with Nearly ( *Sigh*. I want to read a mystery novel not a book full of angst), it didn't really turn into a love triangle (meaning it died out pretty soon). There was also a touch of paranormal since Nearly could feel other people's emotions, but it wasn't a huge part of the book. My only big complaint is the fact that although Nearly was smart book-wise, she made really dumb decisions a lot. I won't put any spoilers in here, but all I'm going to say is IF YOU'RE SUSPECTED OF COMMITING A CRIME YOU DIDN'T DO, DON'T PUT YOURSELF IN SITUATIONS THAT LOOK SUSPICIOUS. COMMON SENSE HONEY. COMMON SENSE .
Warning: There were some cuss words sprinkled in, other unsavoury characters did drugs, and there was a scene where Nearly was at a party, but she didn't do drugs or alchohol or anything else like that. Keep in mind that the book deals with characters living in a poor town where people turn to crime to pay the bills, so some situations are to be expected.
I need to get my hands on the next book now. 4 stars.

2.5 stars. All the elements of a great story were there but it just never quite made it. I rounded up to 3 stars because the mystery was clever and I was surprised by who the culprit was. I must say I never once suspected them. However I was constantly frustrated by the stupid decisions Nearly made and her lack of respect for pretty much everyone in her life except the ex-con who admitted to dealing drugs and being responsible for someone's death and who was spending time with her because the police wanted him to watch her and report on her as part of his parole (and she KNEW this). Given that Nearly is aware that Reece is watching her for the police because she is a suspect she is way too open and trusting with him especially given her lack of trust in pretty much everyone else. Also Jeremy is supposedly her bestest friend in all the world, the one person who is always there for her yet she tells him nothing about what is going on and blows him off for the good-looking douche ex-con without explanation. I don't fault her for not wanting a relationship with Jeremy- you can't force love. I do fault the way she cuts him out of her life. And I hated the disrespect she had for her mother. Mona did the best she good to give Nearly a better chance in life. Yet she reserves all her positive feelings for her deadbeat dad who abandoned them without a word leaving debts that poor Mona had to pay. I will read the next one because as I said the mystery was well plotted and surprising yet I would hope for some character development on Nearly's part and that she actually applies her supposedly high intelligence to her decisions.
First, look at how beautiful that cover is!! I know we aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I do! The cover helps to draw the reader in but the amazing writing keeps you.
Second, Elle Cosimano is a super sweet, nice, and amazing person. I loved meeting her and talking with her at National Book Fest 2015. She was the reason I went and definitely did not disappoint!
Third, I just love this book! It is intriguing, smart, well-developed, and leaves you guessing. I did a re-read of Nearly Gone and even though I knew who was behind everything, I still didn't see where the answer was right in front of your face.

For our mystery book club, we were asked to read a YA mystery. I chose this one from the list since the protagonist was a female student who had excellent math skills.
Nearly is her name, and ever since her father left and she thought she saw a cryptic message from him in the Personals, she has checked them daily, hoping for more messages.
Her mother earns a living by dancing at a club near the trailer park where they live.
A student is found under the bleachers after an attack, and Nearly finds a message in the Personals that relates to the incident. The girl lives, but victims that follow are not so lucky.
Since this is a YA book, there is the requisite "bad boy" who is attracted to Nearly.
I enjoyed the way Cosimano handled the plot and the characters. It seemed realistic in that loose ends were not necessarily tidied up, and there wasn't a happily ever after for everyone.
This is listed as #1, so I presume there will be more Nearly books in the future.

I felt like the plot was lost at some parts throughout the book, and the mind bending "oh my gosh" moment was like 1/3 clues I was actually able to figure out-- and I figured it out 100ish pages before Nearly did.
Also, the ending (like, the epilogue)? I understand setting up a book for a sequel, but the way it was left between certain characters was unrealistic and extremely frustrating.
